Help with my first OC, Intel Q6600

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hi,
I’m new to the overclock world and I recently bought a Intel Core Quad Duo Q6600. I know it is really overclockable and I would like to run it to just 3.0 Ghz (now it is 2.4, standard). These are its proprieties: http://ark.intel.com/products/29765.
My motherboard is a Foxconn 9657AA (http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=motherboard&U=en-us0000171) with the latest bios available, and I have 4 stick of 1 GB of Kingston 667 Mhz.
I know this is an old system, but it’s what I have and I just would like to get the most out of it.

I checked out the internet for guides and other people who wanted to do the same things, but I didn’t understand everything. I thought it would have been better to ask to people who understand this completely!
I got that I should put up the Bus Speed to 333 Mhz, with the multiplier at 9, put up the cpu-voltage a little bit (how much do you think would be perfect?), and change the FSB to DRAM ratio(now it is 4:5), but to how much? Are there other things I should change?
I also have some problems with finding the right attributes in the bios! I’m posting a couple of pictures, it would be nice if you guys also could guide me through the bios. I just don’t want to change anything I don’t have to!

I know that for guys with experience like you are this could sound really dumb, but I just don’t have any experience and I would like to get the most out of this CPU I (safely) can.
Thanks for the help!

Dude,,, you bough a Q6600 ? its nearly 7 years old... why didnt you buy at least an LGA 1155 based system.?

I personally have no experience at overclocking LGA 775. although it must be the same proses as newer sockets.

I already had the whole system, I just updated the CPU to the best one I could have got on the MOBO...
I would like to know if there is somebody that can guide me step by step in the bios, cuz I never manage to do all the necessary changes!

This works totaly different than i3/5/7 overclocking... it's been a long while since I overclocked my Q9450...

Do you have stock intel cooling??? Or I hope it has a decent cooler... Zalman 9700 or something like that was good those days (and others ofcourse rolleyes.gif ) --> It's best to stay under 65°C when stresstesting the cpu.

Your RAM is DDR2 so it's DOUBLE DATA RATE it means that if your RAM is 800MHz it's 400MHz. If it's 667MHz, it's just 333MHz. So always half of it. NEVER type 800MHz into your bios or it will try to overclock it at 1600MHz which would explode or somthing tongue.gif
So your RAM divider is the ratio between the (half) ram FSB and the FSB.
If it's 1:1 it means both are eg 333MHz
Etc... just be sure to select the thing that cut's your RAM frequency in half wink.gif so then you know your ram has plenty of headroom (as it also will increase) because it's running at half the speed it can. Later, after a stable overclock, you can tune ram again wink.gif

And you have FSB and QFSB (Quadpumped FSB) so that means if your proc runs at a QFSB of 1066MHz it's FSB will be 266MHz (1066 : 4 = 266MHz)
If it runs at 1333MHz it's 1333 : 4 = 333MHz
Etc...

And you have multiplier (MP) wich is processor speed : FSB --> it's always a number as this: 5 - 5,5 - 6 - 6,5 - 7 - 7,5 - ...

So you have a Q6600: it's a 2.6GHz (2666MHz) which runs at a QFSB of 1066

So your FSB is 266MHz (1066:4)
Your MP is 2666:266= 10

If you increase FSB or MP your proc speed will increase
If you set FSB to 333 your proc will be: 333x10= 3.3GHz but it can olso be 370x9=3.3GHz --> lower MP is easier to handle stability wise...
Put it to 400 it becomes a 4GHz

Simple as that, BUT to achieve those speeds it must be stable ofcourse! And that's where you increase vcore bit by bit...

Just start like this:
set al bus speeds to it's locked speed and not auto (as they will increase with the overclock and might destroy your hardware...
If I recall correct these are the speeds --> better wait to someone that confirm this before blowing up your computer wink.gif
PCI = 33MHz
AGP= 66MHz
PCI-e = 100MHz

Then search for the lowest volt your cpu will be stable (do this step by step and boot back into windows to do a stability test)

Once you have found the lowest voltage for your stock cpu settings you can start increasing the FSB. You now have a 2.6, so aim for the 2.8GHz now. So 2800 : 10 = 280 --> type 280 in the FSB option in bios and come back to windows and do a stress test for 1 hour (you need 12h+ AT LEAST to be sure it's stable) Check your temp (RealTemp is a good program) and be sure it does not hit 65°C

If it's stable, good, go for 3.0GHz and repaet tests.
If not stable (BSOD, Blue Screen Of Death) reboot PC, go into bios, add 2 notches of voltage and retry.
If temperatures of 65°C are reached, you have reached your max overclock. Or buy better cooling wink.gif

Repeat the above steps to overclock...

As i said in your other thread:Lower the voltage to about 1.15-1.2 and see what you can get with that by raising the fsb..lower your RAM strap 1 notch 1st..
