Anyone running 7970 + 7990? - Page 3

Don't worry, the 7990's aren't going anywhere, and it's certainly a viable option

If you didn't have water cooling, I'd lean toward the 290X, but since you got it under water, it's hard to argue against 3x7970s

Some representative example reviews:

The only reason to go 7970 + 7990 is if you are absolutely 100% stone-cold certain that the games you play behave well with tri-fire. And that's to say nothing of the potential coil whine issues the 7990 can have...

But IMO, this is all you need to know:

13.1 and 13.3? those are some old drivers. i thought you were speaking of firsthand experience. at least you sounded like one.

There are no positive reviews of trifire on the web that I'm aware of on any drivers. And I'm not aware of drivers newer than that mentioning any tri-fire fixes.

If you're going to criticize reviews using older drivers, you need to provide some sort of evidence that newer drivers fix things. I've not seen any such evidence. It's not like 13.1 or 13.3 are launch drivers... these are mature drivers for the 7xxx series, which should not exhibit the horrible problems that they do. The TPU review is particularly telling - there are a number of games were trifire performs WORSE than two or even one card.

The issue was that the pre-bf4 drivers I was running on my 7970 were giving me about 20fps less than what I am getting now with the 13.11beta drivers. If my 7970 can get 45-55fps at 1600p/Ultra, I am now confident that the 290x will achieve constant 60fps. 7990+7970 now seems overkill, on top of the trifire issues I may have had to work out. I'm not saying it would have been bad; it probably would have been ridiculously awesome. It's just that I'd rather do it with 1 card and much less heat/power if I can get away with it.

To be fair Mack, this review was pretty glowing about the setup:

13.8 onwards made a lot of strides fixing whatever frame pacing problems presents. i for one never had problems with crossfire as far back as 13.2 driver but, i only played BF3, C3 and C2. i know there are games that have issues for both crossfire/sli. read the last post of the op. 13.11 is even better. also, amd cards, afaik, scales better than nvidia cards.

The problems with tri-fire have to do with games showing either no scaling or showing negative scaling (or rarely just not working), not frame pacing.

And I don't know why that TT review is so positive... half their tests show no meaningful improvement between 2x crossfire (7990) and 3x crossfire (7990 + 7970) [PSO2, F1 2012, Metro 2033, Nexuiz, Sleeping Dogs, Far Cry 2, and Hitman: Absolution]

In TPU's review, it's Alan Wake, Assassin's Creed 3, Arkham City, Borderlands 2, Crysis, Crysis 2, Diablo 3, F1 2012, Hitman: Absolution, Max Payne 3, Starcraft 2, Skyrim, and WoW that exhibit problems.

We're not talking about frame pacing, we're not talking about launch drivers, and we're not talking about new games. Tri-fire has major problems, and should only be done for benchmarking or if you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that the games you play behave with it. When it works, it scales really well, but it appears to have something like a 50% failure rate across all games in terms of how it scales. That's terrible.
