True. It is extremely sad.
Just to remind/inform tho, that the same happened when Christianity rose to power, as a religion supporting that the Roman Emperor - usually also the head of Church - was the guided hand of God. Infallible amongst the living subjects, answering only to God.

Theodosius was a ruthless emperor, had the pagan religion forbidden and all those that opposed him slaughtered - thousands where killed publicly as an example, and most of the pagan temples were leveled and the material was repurposed in building fortifications and/or Christian temples. We can only wonder how many statues of pagan gods are buried in roman concrete in various monuments around the empire, and whenever you wonder in awe in front of a roman/byzantine temple with a lot of marble incorporated in its construction, do believe that it sits on top of a similarly sized pagan temple, which were all not just raised to the ground but replaced by a similarly sized and themed Christian temple: e.g. if it was as an Apollo temple glorifying his "sun chariot" on the top of the mountain, would become a Prophet Elijah temple that also flew in the heavens instead of dying a mortal death.
If it was a temple of Athena, the virgin, wise and loving warrior godess, it would be replaced by a temple dedicated to virgin Mary etc - "tradition" was forged to fill in the place of the old pagan gaps piece by piece.

Any symbol or celebration of pagan origin was also banished (anyone wondered why the Olympic games "disappeared" before those were revived in 1896?).
Philosophers were converted or killed, books were stashed and/or burned.
Nothing that different from what happened to all the Christian "apostates/heretics" that believed is a different Dogma than what the Emperor and his court thought was appropriate ofc.

Quote mining through the Bible or the Qur’an can ofc justify any action those authoritative wackos wanted to.
Islam did not invent cruelty and totalitarianism.

Actually it shares all of the repulsive laws on how to deal with out-of-faith people and objects with the Jewish Law, what Jesus never rejected, and what Christians despite renaming as “Old Testament”, never got out of the Bible.
Honest move, because Jesus – at least according to the followers who did get the divine gift of being able to write, because he and his 1st evangelist, Paul, could not – never abolished the Jewish Law.

Being honest to your roots doesn’t make them right ofc, but at least unlike some modern Christians that say it is “ok” to disregard the Old Testament as a “replaced” text, at least respects what "wise" men like Theodosius I spilled a lot of "infidel" blood to build.

The Ancient Jewish were always daydreaming of their god enabling them to do all those things (describing them in their imaginary battlegrounds in the book), but they never got to have the military might the Romans and later the Arabs/Ottomans had in order to go further than hopes.

Sorry if I "read" biased, I just want people to have - what I think is - a more spherical understanding of the processes that forged our biases and culture throughout history, and stop thinking of Islam as an exception.
It is secular morality that caught up with the western world and changed these stuff. Not the contents of the books which in so many ways are identically authoritative and equally dangerous in the hands of people with great power believing the books can be to absolute morality and judgement.
