Unmount the drive, hold in your hand and defrag and see if it's still making loud noises. If not, vibration problems with case?

Maybe instead of RMAing based on sound you should see if the HDD has actual defects? Most of the time a bad noise is caused by your installation.

i have 2 of those zalman hdd coolers on my rapters and there silent. No noise at all...

when i didnt have the hdd coolers the rapters were loud, louder than the average 7200 rpm drive...

if you have the drives in a raid 1 both the hard drives are making noises at the exact same time. So you may be hearing a "dual" hdd sound that sounds weird. If you have then in a raid....

oh thats sikk yeh....no noise at all? how load iz the rest of ur system tho?
mine iz quite quiet...and i have a sliding 5 inch bay door in my case that i keep open to allow air flow
even with this i wnt be able to hear it?
i thinking of getting the 36 gig version thow...iz that as quiet?

I have a 74gig Raptor that makes that grinding noise as well, but only while reading like someone else said. I assume its normal, it works just fine and I've had it for about a month.
