I don't know, I would like to see more swappable components on motherboards and such (such as swappable bridges, ethernet ports, and usb ports) but I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen. frown.gif

go to digi-key or mouser and buy a proto board, a wire-wrap tool a couple of logic ICs to start off and go nuts. it's not hard to get a hold of an 8086 ($10 on ebay) and learn how to make a computer from scratch.

boards like the arduino always exisited, just not in a simple buy it in one go form. so really "open source" is just a buzzword here since plans and circuit diagrams for computers have been around the internet since the web existed.

This is true, but there's a lot of low-level knowledge and expertise involved in all of that. Having custom-purpose devices like Arduino reduce the learning curve, and that in turn increases the size of the development community. Someone who thinks he/she may be able to handle a simple Arduino project may be doing exactly what you describe a few projects later, when they never would have attempted it otherwise. For example, most of us who began fiddling with computers started by taking apart our store-bought PCs to put in an extra stick of RAM, etc.

The easier it is to become part of the dev community, the better the community becomes.
