Just saying I wouldnt have minded a brick outside the system if it meant the fans would keep quiet

Understandable. Power bricks don't bother me much, I just prefer to not have them is all. My PC is about 10x louder than my PS4 so the sound is always drowned out. redface.gif

Other way around for me. My PS4 is ten times louder when playing TLOU/Bloodborne than my 290X PC lol headscratch.gif

Best thing you can do for your PS4 is to raise it off it's surface that it lays on about 1/2 an inch, and of course make sure it's in an open area with a lot of room to breathe. The system really warms up whatever it sits on and that heat doesn't go anywhere so lifting it up a bit will let it get some circulation underneath. Some PS4s just can't be helped with that alone and you would have to take it apart and look at the paste job that was done to it. If it was caked on and all over the place thats a culprit for the system getting hot. Apply your own paste of choosing, preferably non-conductive paste, and make sure you tighten the clamp well when putting it back together so the APU die makes good contact with the heatsink.

Is there an area you can go in a get a readout of whats happening undernthe hood? Current cpu usage/temps, mem usage/temps. Kind of like the dev console fornyour cell phones

Hate my tablets spell check. It was correct until i hit Submit and it munches words together and causes spelling mistakes

a couple of PS4s apparently do have that. It even has a name by now. "Hair blower PS4 systems". Apparently the thermal paste is not applied correctly. I would replace it if I had some laying around, but I haven't turned on my PS4 in 3 months so I don't bother atm.

I have the hair dryer model myself. Just finished doing car repairs for my daughter and now I can't sit still so maybe I'll redo mine after work tomorrow. I'd been contemplating it already anyhow.

Hey,

I was wondering if im just being overly sensitive to noises again or if it is indeed abnormal behavior of my PS4 drive:

A few days ago I noticed that my disc drive is sometimes making strange noises when reading/playing a BluRay or DVD. However, this totally depends on the disc - some movie/TV Show/Game BluRays I checked are absolutely running fine without any strange (background) reading noises coming from the drive. These reading noises can be easily heard when sitting a few meters away from the PS4.

Note: even if there are these sounds the disc can be read without any problems.

As it is difficult to describe noises, I recorded some soundfiles:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/grl5nrcnd1wbhn8/Einlesen%20RS%20Live%20BR.m4a?dl=0

This is for instance a BluRay with some live music directly after I inserted it into the drive and the PS4 starts its initial reading - you can easily hear a faint click at 0:11 after which the noise suddenly stops.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/uv6211qab00piry/RS%20Live%20BR%20Ende.m4a?dl=0

The last 5 tracks on the disc cannot be read/played without these noises (see the file) - in comparison the first 10 tracks will be played without additional background noises coming from the drive.

However: another BluRay player is running this particular BluRay nice and quietly.

Out of curiosity, I tested various BluRays of some movies and/or TV shows - some of them are played fine, others sound more like this again: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oojxl015tpp07zp/GoT.m4a?dl=0.
Its the same sound again, but somehow quieter than before.

Where does this disc reading noise come from, why does the intensity change depending on the disc and why are some BluRays fine, others however sound like the PS4 drive is scratching them?

Is this supposed to be "normal" or is my drive beginning to fail?

Btw:
I tried to google this behavior and found a video on youtube which shows similar noises: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXA2QCaOVgU

Greetings
