squid proxy server

Hi guys I installed squid proxy server 2.7 on windows server 2012 set it all up and set up internet explorer for the client PCs to use the squid proxy server, so far so good everything works fine, all I have is a little confusion in what I hear the cache make a big difference as it caches the downloaded files and when the PC will kneed to download them again it will be much faster as it will downloading from the internal server, well to say the truth if a file took 2 min to download and I try to download it again it takes the same 2min, when I go to squid cache folder the used size just goes up a Little maybe 1mb or sometimes nothing so what I am saying I did not see any advance with it, anyone here tried it out or have any experience

It doesn't cache file downloads.

It caches things like web sites.
