I don't blame you for waiting...if I was patient I would've went the same route, or maybe a 780ti classified or something, but alas I'm keeping myself warm for the holidays with these two 280x's lol...

Raw performance yes...but noisy and lots of heat too!!!

I hear you on the patience bit, even more so as mine is somewhat artificial (aka have to save up before I can purchase the shinies). Love how pretty your rig looks!

Hey peoples, due to the issues I was having with Crossfire, I decided to sell my remaining R9 280x (Matrix Platinum) and go in a different direction. The Crossfire setup I was running with the Matrix and Sapphire Toxic was just throwing off way too much heat, and even with a full pci slot between cards, 4 200mm fans and 5 140mm fans circulating air around my case, they just weren't enough to keep the cards cool after more than a few minutes of heavy gaming.

I originally had an Asus DC2T in my crossfire setup but it couldn't clock any higher than 1150mhz without artifacting badly, and the Toxic could only hit 1200mhz. The Matrix on the other hand could hit 1240mhz semi reliably but I just wasn't satisfied with the performance I was getting out of the setup. I also was having driver issues seemingly constantly, and the Xstar monitor I have is capable of 120hz but the stupid drivers would cause issues with flash, videos, and basically anything other than games for some reason when the monitor was overclocked. No set of drivers I tried (and I tried the last 5 or 6 betas AND the WHQL set) seemed to help with my setup.

I really didn't want to get rid of the cards, but Newegg screwed me when I attempted to return and exchange my Toxic, so they refunded me my money and claimed not to have any cards in stock for exchange. Frustratingly so, less than 12 hours later they had cards in stock but marked them up to $469 and expected me to pay the new amount when I originally got it for $341. Since the miners have inflated AMD prices so badly, I took my money and got 2 Lightning 780's instead, and the experience has been quite a bit smoother so far. The best part is, each card was only $499 brand new smile.gif

This is my first run at Firestrike and Valley with the new cards, no overclock and totally stock settings. Not too shabby...biggrin.gif

Thanks...this thing just seems to keep on evolving and changing day by day lol. I think I'm going to stick with the Lightnings this time around since I'm tired of swapping gpu's and so far they rock, but I think I'm just gonna say f*** it and jump into watercooling really soon here!!!

I hear you on the swapping of components - we've had to do a bit of that on the spouse's computer and it was somewhat annoying... Mmmm, watercooling... i'm looking forward to my first adventure in that arena in the coming months (only have about 3 months to go or so until I start acquiring components for my new rig, so yaay!)

More hindsight...but I probably picked the wrong motherboard for my setup. Had I known I was going to Crossfire/Sli, I would've picked a motherboard with more available PCI slots so I could've spaced the cards a lot better than this one is capable of. Had I done that right the first time, I wouldn't even consider watercooling and would keep these Lightnings on air. With the current setup, if I try to overclock the gpu's, the top card will touch 87-88 degrees C after extended gaming/benchmark sessions, and that's seriously making me consider going under water.

I guess I could also save some money and possibly just invest in a better motherboard instead...but I'm not too sure about that idea yet.

I hope when you get around to doing yours you plan it out a little better than I did mine!!! redface.gif

I hope when you get around to doing yours you plan it out a little better than I did mine!!! redface.gif

Understandable... Myself, I've been debating about a rig that's relatively similar to yours, and SLI is also a question. Originally I was thinking just a single 780Ti, but given that I'm getting back into EVE Online (goodbye free time! tongue.gif) AND Asus announced the ROG Swift, my decision to switch up to 1440p has been accelerated somewhat... ^_^ Might consider surround gaming at 1440p, but for some reason it seems difficult to find information on how feasible it is across three monitors at 2,560x1,440.

I'm hoping the planning I've done so far will help things pan out smoothly, although my ideas on which case to go with seem to change on a semi-regular basis (right now the biggest debate is between two Case Labs cases, the S5 vs M8 to be precise), and that debate in my head is soon to become even more difficult since they're teasing a new, what looks to be full ATX horizontal motherboard case, to be revealed in the coming days. Thankfully, most of the other parts are fairly standard, so shouldn't pose too many issues ^_^
