Undervolting llano on linux

Got tired of windows, and I'm about to nuke my HP dv6 and install a linux distro on it.

However, I just realized my precious K10stat won't work! (For those who don't know, llano APUs ship with some massive voltage and frequency headroom. I can change the maximum power state, for example, from 1500 to 2400mhz while using LESS voltage, I can bump the idle speed from 800 to 400mhz + a ridiculous undervolt for some major power savings).

Is there any equivalent program to edit p-states for linux? I've looked into k10ctl, phc, and cpupowerd, but I'm not sure if any even support llano or the latest linux kernel.

I just stumbled on turionpowercontrol, which was updated Jan 2013 and may work.

If it works, I'll post results for all those llano laptop APU users who want to undervolt their CPU... meh, I'm probably the only one out there rolleyes.gif

First off, Xubuntu is awesome. It still scares the heck out of me when it pops up 2 seconds after pressing the power button... no MadVR makes me sad though.

Anyway, looks like the TPC is working, but it's command line only... takes some getting used to I guess. Really wish there was a GUI for it, as tweaking all 7 power states on all 4 cores is gonna take some time.

You could probably automate that with a simple shell script.

What's the commands you need to do to alter all the power states?

I'm nuking the machine now and switching to KUbuntu, which is why I don't have access to tpc in the terminal atm.


What would be awesome is an automatic stability tester script for each pstate. Something like: lower 4 core voltages on 1 pstate -> stress test at that pstate for ~10-15 minutes -> bump up voltage and move to next p-state after an error or lower the voltage and repeat if stable.

The trick would be finding a stress test that can report errors, integrating it into the scripts, locking the pstates (easy), and well... making the script, as I'm new to linux biggrin.gif But in theory, the script would work for anyone running linux + AMD.

You could have just " sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop " and then " sudo apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop ". No need for a re-install just to swap desktop environments.

I sorta messed up my install with catalyst, compiz, and some wierd power saving tweaks, and starting from a clean slate just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

I'll do that if I want to try another GUI.
