AMD R9 280x: ASUS or MSI?

post #1 of 18
Thread Starter
Alright, in my recent thread i had come to the conclusion of getting the ASUS DirectCUII model of the R9 280x. Upon further thought, im thinking it may be better to get the MSI Gaming edition card. This would (somewhat) match my MSI GD65 Z77 motherboard. Just wondering which one performs better, is more silent, is better performing out of the box, and which one you think would be a better option.

Thanks.

I would check benchmarks of the specific brands. One will usually have a slightly higher clock. Some reviews also have db level measurements.

Other than that I haven't heard anything bad about either cooler design. I guess the only down side is the 3 slot cooler on the ASUS.

I having the same dilemma, the Asus 280x is out of stock on newegg, so i have to wait to make a decision.

Here's a link to a review i found that compares both cards. I'm not sure how reliable the site is though.

ASUS has two models of the same card, different coolers: The DirectCUII is the two slot card, and the DirectCUII V2 is the triple slot design. Just to note.

LOL, the situation matches your profile pic. I had ordered the matrix on friday, but i started having second thoughts about its size and also the fact that it has no hdmi output (i know, it has an adapter), so i finally cancelled it. No i have no card to wait for thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Lucky you!

Yes it does match! LOL! It for sure is a monster. Have you been looking at any of the others for HDMI output? I have not paid attention to that matter because I just use my DVI cables. Maybe you will find something soon. thumb.gif

This will be my fastest GPU I have ever had. I have said that several times in my life though.. LOL!

My first card was a TNT2 ULTRA->Voodoo 3 2000->Geforce4 MX 440->ATI 3850 256mb-> GTX 260 Core 216->Radeon 6950 2gb (in my sons computer now)->2 x 7850 2gb(going back when the 280 gets here)->Asus 280x

The ASUS has a better cooler. MSI's R9-280X doesn't cool VRM well.

The ASUS has its flaws too such as ASUS warranty which is problematic for some, a higher idle fan speed (easy to fix yourself), and poor die contact on earlier models (7970 V1).

If it were you, which one would you buy?
