[PCper] Microsoft Confirms AMD Mantle Not Compatible with Xbox One - Page 6

Why does everyone think mantle is going to be the end all of API's?
I mean its AMD's first go around. You are all joining in pretty much assuming it is going to be the end all be all of API's ever, and that passing it up is the greatest curse ever.

This has to be the best marketing ploy by AMD yet.

Not really... we are saying it has the potential to bring huge performance and visual benefits over current APIs. Whether that potential will be fulfilled - who knows?

Even if Microsoft get scared of concurrent graphical API, although limited only to GCN graphics, and starts to make proper performance upgrades for ALL windows users then its a good move forward.

Now as Win7 user MS is giving messages to me in a manner "forget about DX 11.2", while Mantle with my GCN graphic card promises far more what MS ever did with DirectX.

So yeah... While MS is not going to upgrade DX API on my current OS, but AMD promises new way with same OS and HW I currently have, I am willing to try that way. Why not? It does not cost me anything. Upgrade to Win 8 or higher would cost me money...

Seriously? I love how people just keep making things up. Consoles don't use APIs? Who told you that?

And anyone thinking ms will give their proprietary api to amd to use on windows needs to get their thinking straight.

Microsoft licensed the apu from amd. Amd is not doing any of the api work on the Xbox, that is entirely Microsoft's court.

headscratch.gif all i'm saying is that MS need the best coding possible to get the best out of their less-good hardware. Devs will be optimising for both PS4 and XBone, so I reckon quite a decent chunk of optimisations will be portable.

Yes, there will be optimization. For their proprietary api which amd won't ever touch. While the architecture is the same the low level api being used on the xbox1 and ps4 are not the same as mantle in anyway shape or form aside from utilizing the same graphics architecture. That is why the idea of cut and paste optimization is extremely unlikely.

I'm about to put on my tin foil hat but I honestly an starting to believe amd was as vague as they were about mantle strictly so that the hype machine would go crazy with the idea of mantle being the exact same api as what's on the xbox1 or ps4.

My programming knowledge is negligible, so I'll take your word for it. Would this mean there is absolutely no advantage to getting both consoles, and no optimisations can be "easily" transferred to PC and then tweaked/abstracted a bit?
