A Better than pCChps P23G w/Celeron D 351 $55 combo

I got one of these from Tiger for $55 after rebate and it didn't work. (mobo didn't beep and no video output, but fan worked and LAN led lit - tried other PSU and still the same thing so returned it.)

I want to build a few very cheap but reasonably fast PC's for number crunching (neural nets). I figured if this combo worked, it would be a sweet deal especially since I had 2x512 MB of Kingston ddr400 ram laying around.

Any other suggestions in this price range? I realize this mobo is basically compost but you know some types of compost work better than others!

I also saw Tiger had a $10 939 3000+ Sempron which can also be the start of another great system if I can find a nice POS mobo that, all I ask of it, works.

Any thoughts?

BTW, I would pay twice as much if I could get run my nets twice as fast. While this scalability never occurs for the most part, some of the Core 2 processors offer this 2x at the higher end which is really quite amazing. However, the starting point for the 2x is too high a starting point for me.

I'm in a position where I can have 4 PC's crunching numbers just as easily a one that is 4 times as fast.

Thanks in advance
Tom

from what I read PC chips makes terrible motherboards and ranks right up there with ECS. on new egg I found a combo where you get a sempron 2800+ retail boxed with a biostar n force 4 4x board and a leadtek PCX geforce 5750 128mb all for $105 which is a great deal considering the quality of the components and having a dedicated graphics card.

Actually, I've had ZERO luck with new mobos. Bot a SOYO KT600 Ultra Platinum Dragon and it would not pass Gold Memory w/200FSB and 3200+ Barton after RMAs, cpus, memories, then tried this PCCHips deal and no luck. So that covered a new fairly premium board and a new compost board....

Local computer shop bot 5 PCChips mobos from distributor and ALL FIVE were bad. The replacements were all good.

Now with eBay, I've had luck buying old Socket A mobo combos just to get the PC133 memory! Even the crappy Matsonic I got worked OK (was a rare 133mHz version w/bad caps). Got the elusive Abit Kt7E sleeper which was cool.

So I'm gun shy from new - especially if I have a lot of money invested. And when you get into issues of mobo/cpu/memory compatibility its time to call it quits really.

I've learned the hard way the best thing to do is put it together, if it doesn't work, spend maybe 30 minutes to fix and THAT IS ALL! SEND EVERYTHING BACK. There really isn't any other choice because the problem can be defectives OR compatibilities. A lose/lose situation: crummy quality control or crummy design.

My first question now is I have a refund from Tiger, do I order another one since can still make the rebate?

oh, and then there is the tactic of getting an open box/refurb of a quality mobo. from what I've read, there can be big problems with that. One guy was having some luck with MSI upholding the factory warranty, but the last one he returned they just thru it back in his face and said it was good.

I'm really thinking buying complete mobo combos on eBay is the way to go.

oh... forgot to add another mixed new board result: the Soyo was so bad, I got an NF7S V2 and while it did work, I had to really thread the needle to get 205 FSB w/2-3-2-5 HyperX and a 3200+ Barton. A luke warm experience again.

So do the newegg open boxes come with the back plate because it says you just get the board only, I was just curious?

When people say PCChips is junk, do they mean their quality control is non-existent or rather, that their products are poorly designed and do not work properly.

I have found that if you can pass Gold Memory with your build, XP will run for many, many months w/o needing to reboot. (I usually leave machines on all week and turn them off on Friday.) I had one machine go 2 years when it finally puked when trying to play a video while Adobe decided to update itself.

(I'm really tempted to get another PCC combo to try again - not totally unlike the child that just has to stick his finger in a light socket...)

Of course, if the PCC stuff has a tendancy to simply not work right... well that isn't tru because the local computer guy in town here builds pcc computers. Of course, he is able to return 1/2 of them that are defective...

lol from my experience, newegg open box products come with everything- cables, driver cds, EVERYTHING.

Of course, this may not be the case for you. It doesn't always happen.
