[TweakTown] DICE says it will support Linux, could see Battlefield 4 on SteamOS

During a recent interview, DICE's Director, Lars Gustavsson alluded to the company officially supporting Linux with a port of the new Frostbite Engine 3. He said that all it will take is for a single killer game (such as Battlefield 4) to be ported to the free OS and the platform would become as popular for gaming as Windows.

Gustavsson says that DICE wants to create the "Halo" of Linux, referencing the Bungie title that made the Xbox a success overnight. He said that the company will port Frostbite 3 over to Linux and that means that we could see games like Battlefield 4, and other big name titles coming to Linux machines everywhere. A big factor in this will be Valve's SteamOS which has support from AMD and NVIDIA and is needed to get the high-end graphics support needed on Linux.

It's like all devs were closet Linux fans. tongue.gif

This is big, big news if true. If Frostbite 3 is going to Steam OS, then it's possible that many if not all of EA's PC games would work there. That's the kind of news it's going to take for Steam OS to actually become a legit alternative to Windows.

I really, really hope this starts a snowball effect of devs moving away from Windows. I can't wait to ditch this OS for Linux.

Problem is all this really is happens to be good news. It will get talked about to death until people realize nothing happened. It will generate a ton of interest and publicity. If BF4 was headed to Linux for sure it would have been announced a long time ago. When developers talk about possibilities it usually means the string pullers have not asked , planned or intend to do any such thing.

But here is hoping its true anyways. Porting the engine is a large part of the battle. But if there is no pay to due to do the rest of the work that means no authorization to do so on spec either.

To me at least the new distros of Fedora has always been better than Windows by a mile tongue.gif

Who doesn't want this to be true? thumb.gif
