Lol, this is pretty much what I waited for, too, before I considered the Atom a viable option.
I still have an Asus UL30A laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 1.3 GHz CPU. I use it on Windows 7 (Crucial m4 512GB) and 8.1 (SanDisk Extreme 240GB) and it works pretty well on both. Windows 8.1 was actually a smoother experience although I can't really tell if that's because my Windows 7 install is 4 years old while 8.1 is a clean install. I reckon Bay Trail would be able to match my old laptop's performance. The graphics is also a considerable upgrade over the one found in the G45 chipset.
Now the only sticking point for me is using Windows 8.1 in desktop mode. Even with Classic Shell, I still like Windows 7 much better. Edited by rui-no-onna - 10/27/13 at 3:44pm
