Pimp my rig (Phenom II)

Thread Starter
Hi, people!

You can see my rig in the signature. I was wondering if I need a better CPU cooler than the Hyper 212+ for a good overclock over 4.0 GHz on my Phenom II 965. Also, if I need a better power supply unit.
About the coolers, choosing from what we have available in Bulgaria, I listed some options:
1. Noctua NH-D14
2. Thermalright Archon SB-E X2
3. Thermaltake Frio Advanced
4. CM V8
5. CM V8 GTS
6. CM Seidon 120XL
7. CM Hyper 612S
8. Sapphire Vapor-X

Keep in mind that I could probably go decide and get an FX-8320 OR replace my AM3+ parts with Z87MoBo+i5-4670k in a couple of weeks or months.

Any advice, please?

well the noctua is a really good cooler,,never used it,,but heard many good reviews about it,,if your thinking of going with a 8320,,,,probably an h100 would be better,,,i cant find your motherboard specs,,,,,does it have at least a 6+2 power phasing,,,,,what exactly are you doing with this computer,,,gaming I assume,,,,,a 6300 wouldn't be a bad choice either if your motherboard is 4+2 power phasing,,,,or you could jump on the Intel wagon,,,there are some good combo deals,,

http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

heres the recommended power supply list,,,your PSU isn't on the list,,,,you may have problems overclocking a vishera and running a 7950 with that PSU you have,,,,not sure,,,shilka should come and answer that question,,hes the PSU man

trailer park boy, thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me! HERE are the specifications of my mainboard, it is rated as having 8+2 Power phasing.

You assumed correctly - a very good gaming performance is the main goal.

I really hope someone around here has heard about my Thermaltake Power supply (link), so they can give me advice if I should buy a new one.

ok that's good to hear,,so you got good board,,,,lotsa power,,,TBH,,,going Intel at this point would only get you a little increase,,nothing historic,,,,not really worth the cash,,for the extra performance,,,,really consider getting a closed loop cooler or something,,,even with the noctua cooler,,,your still only gonna make""maybe "" 4.5ghz,,,you would be surprised at how easy vishera overclocks,,but they get pretty hot,,fast

Well your power supply got great reviews on Newegg, but thats all I can speak of on that. If you are serious about serious overclocking, then yea, either an all-in-one cooler or a custom loop.

And what about my Phenom II with a cooler of this class? You have an interesting signature, it intrigued me.

Okay, so far my ideas are going in the direction of spending money on a new CPU first and only then on a cooler, except if I get convinced on the contrariwise.

And when it comes to coolers, my new list of ideas is the following:

1) NH-U14S (same price as D14, considerably smaller size, near as efficient according to several reviews and opinions of people who claim to have tested it.
2) Thermalright Archon SB-E X2 (bigger than the Noctua, which means difficulties when trying to reach the motherboard/RAM).
3) Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme (kinda big, kinda more expensive)
4) Cooler Master V8 GTS - review
Noctua D14 - too big, a few degrees do not justify size-based headaches.

If you're going to spend $80-100 on a cooler, why not get an all-in-one liquid cooler?
