Thinkpad - Page 3

Again, If you look at modern Hdds to SSDs power consumption (on the laptop side) the SSD pulls more power.

my battery life from a 7200rpm drive to ssd is increased by 30 minutes on my thinkpad. it's no longer 2008, modern ssds are less power hungry.

Windows 7 IS NOT POSSIBLE.

i don't understand or why this is in caps, but a modern operating system is always recommended when optimizing a system.

as was posted by someone else, the middleton bios is what you should be after if you want to upgrade your cpu. according to this link it also enables full sata2 speeds.

Wow,

What, exactly. is it that you actually need from this old lappy of yours? I'm a little confused. It seems as if you want to make a desktop replacement out of an old platform...

Win 7 runs perfectly on these laptops. XP is still viable if you need it to run old programs. (MS support really means little at this point for XP!) You can upgrade the cpu but keep in mind the chipset is limited to 667 mhz so why bother? DDR2 ram costs more than a T61 off Ebay so that's not a viable upgrade as you stated already. You need a serial port? spend $15 and grab a usb to serail adapter and call it a day, or, get a docking station off the bay for about $30. In MY personal experience with the R series the SSD upgrade was the most cost effective and gave the best improvement. I use a cut down version of Win 7 and my R60 with 3gb ram runs circles around my daughter's R60 with the same cpu/ram and a 7200 HDD and a full version of Win 7 64. these are our recommendations to you...do what want but don't discount other's opinions because you are failing to get the answer you want. I've read this post several times and I think you would be better served by spending $400 on a brand new I3 laptop than trying to upgrade the T61 which is not going to give you what you want...Just my opinion.

I recently took on the task of upgrading my old x61s.
  • Crucial M4 80GB SSD
  • New Battery
  • Intel 6250

I used a custom bios patch to unlock Sata 2 speeds - and allow for my Intel Wireless card (from a x210). Seems like your T61 would benefit from this bios update with a new SSD.

With the combination of an SSD, bios tweak, and a new wifi card. This laptop has been rejuvenated.
