Windows 8 Pro vs Windows Server 2012 R2?

Thread Starter
I was dead set on buying windows 8 pro 64-bit for $70 with my student email, but then i realized i could get windows server 2012 R2 for free, via my Microsoft dreamspark account. I know the server edition will have all kinda of extra's i will not use, but my question is does server edition not have features a normal home user would need to use the PC like normal? I like to play games and browse the internet, if i used the server edition can i still do that like i do now? I currently have Windows 8 Enterprise Edition evaluation 90 day thing installed.

Windows Server is getting away from GUI and pushing the CLI. The new WS experience is more different from the consumer Windows edition than anything in the last 10 years...

That's not saying it's NOT usable...

ahh ok, Im only looking into this, because ive worked with windows server 2008 (even taking a 3 credit hour college class on it) , and i do know people who use it on desktop pc's. didn't know if 2012 would also work as desktop model.

It should... but WS2012 R2 is even less like the consumer version.

You just might have to configure a few things like background apps have lower priority, disable the Internet block, disable Server Manager.

Also note that some proprietary apps may block installing on server OSes.
