1090T 206x18 Overclock Prim95 Error

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
I'm in the process of stress testing my new build. I've been running Prime95 Blend and received an error on Worker #3 early in the test. At about 2 minutes in received "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" Now I would assume this overclock to not be stable. However, its been an hour now with no reoccurrence. Everything seems to be operational.

How set in stone is the "error means back overclock" mantra? It was an error early on and has run perfectly through out the remainder of the testing.

Specs:

1090T
CPU: 206 @ 3708 Mhz
Multiplier: x18
HT link: x12
HT Link speed: 2472 Mhz
Volt Advance: +0.025 @ 1.475
Core Temp: 47c

Ram:
G.Skill [Sniper] F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR2 16GB total
DRam: Auto

Is there another route I should pursue?

Thanks,
Jaims

id do small ffts first for 12hours+ with the max fft size matching your L1 cache so 8k~64k, the default 8~16k is old and outdated we arent on athlon XP's anymore.. if thats stable with ZERO errors then move to blend &/or linpack, if that gives error you know to look around memory timings/volts/IMC.

since you had that error so fast it very well be the cpu cores themself unstable. also be using the latest stable prime95 being 27.9, beta 28.1 is mostly for haswell & its significantly slower for some reason probably bugs (beta).

how well does the HT link cope with higher clocks? I feel its kinda high at x12 but I wanted to push it. System runs great for mundane tasks but want to lock in top clocks for maximum performance.

Also (I cant recall the exact parameter) I have the CBP? Core boost set to the same x18 multiplier as I didn't want it to spike over the higher clock or drop clocks when it should boost.

ht link is worth slightly reducing if thats what giving stability without ridiculous volts, assuming the volts on everything now are within spec. do one at a time, cpu cores, ht link, imc/ram, if you flip settings for all at once itll take a long time to find whats causing the failure.

Yeah I just did that. Reset the NB freq and HT Link back to x10. I increased the CPU to 215 although I probably shouldn't have. I'm running Small FFT's

I wrote everything down this time so currently specs are as follows

CPU Ratio: x18 @ 3870 Mhz
NB Freq: x10 @ 2150 Mhz
CPB Ratio: x18 @ 3870 Mhz
Turbo CPU: Disable
CPU Freq: 215
HT Link: x10 @ 2150 Mhz
Mem Clock x8 @ 1720Mhz

Prime95 reports no errors so far after 10 Min.

Another question:

If I'm overclocking do I want the CPB enabled? Wouldn't it be better it have a set clock instead of the dynamic frequency adjust? I watch my multiplier drop to x4 on occasion. Its hard to get an accurate read when its jumping around like it does. Also, how does the turbo CPB work, is that where it cuts back to 3 cores and ramps up the frequency? Its disabled by default, is it worth enabling? Could it damage the CPU when overclocked?

Thanks,
Jaims

All right, I think I've found my issue. So the small FFT's were going good. Tried IntelBurn Test and BSOD! So like you said its probably a ram issue first and foremost. I have 1600Mhz ram and my mobo supports it as **OC Only** With the CPU Frequency I had it was pushing well over that. I dropped the Mem Clock to x6.66 which now brings the ram to 1430Mhz. This is higher than the boards rated maximum of 1333 and below the overclock maximum of 1600.

IntelBurn Test just finished on "Standard" with no issues. On to Prime95

I may have found my Gremlin.

Thanks GigaByte

ya i was gonna say its likely your ram if its just throwin errors but not BSOD. idk how well thubens like cpu-nb volts, but i find my X4 deneb likes a little boost on it even if all i want to do is get my ram running at 1866, and my saberkitty supports that speed. also try upping your ram voltage to 1.55v-1.65v, i found when i moved up to 8gb modules that the memory controller will only work until the ram gets so full (its hard to tell at first because it takes a good effort to test all 8gb of a module) then i get instability. memtest helps but i find it misses the mark alot or simply takes way to long to test 32gb of ram lol.
found this nifty guide between this and chews guides it helped alot.

0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue
0x1a = Memory Management errors alot

best luck smile.gif

also back off your htt to 2400, try and keep it and the fsb closer to actual values like 2400, 2600, 2800, est. i find both that odd fsb and htt settings can hurt performance (test tho to make sure) or make an overclock that SHOULD work unstable.
if your mobo supports it keep the fsb ref clock at 200 and just jack up the multi so it runs at 2800. not sure how that's done on a gigabyte but it should be doable. pretty sure you can hit 4ghz with a thuban and a lot of tinkering.

cpb is similar to turbo from sandy bridge & later, instead of having 4 cores at 3.9ghz if only 2 are in use then theyll speed up to X ghz (if they arent at 100% load) as the others shutdown to help offset the power/thermal increase. best to leave it off until you are completely stable at your target speed then try enable it & see if those light/moderate loads are stable.
