Well it doesn't look like the 16-bay NAS devices will be dropping in price anytime soon:

So I am looking at the 4-bay NAS devices. I did a search on eBay and found this 4-bay NAS for $125 used:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/PROMISE-SMARTSTOR-NS4300N-NETWORK-ATTACHED-STORAGE-NAS-4-BAYS-3-5-HARD-DRIVES-/111188071035?pt=US_Home_Network_Storage_NAS_&hash=item19e353527b&_uhb=1
Is this a good deal for a 4-bay NAS or is this model just junk and should I stay away from it?

I will have 4x 3TB drives in the NAS that I purchase and I would like to use all 12TB for storage, consolidated onto one network drive (Z:) or something like that. This is my first NAS build and I would like to know how concerned I should be if my NAS were to mysteriously crap out one day? Would all of my data be gone for good? If this is the case, does drive consolidation really outweigh just having 4 separate drives in a PC case (each their own drive letter)? Maybe I'm not fully understanding the benefits of buying a 4-bay NAS device... Do all NAS devices allow for plug and play with more HDDs? If so, I could see that as being a pretty huge advantage (if it works).

My HTPC box is always turned on and I suppose this could act as NAS too. I don't think I could get that same plug and play functionality out of it that a NAS device could for adding more HDDs into the consolidated drive though, with the HTPC box, or maybe I could?Unfortunately, I have already started them off with 2x 3TB drives and each already full of data. What is the best way to go about moving my existing data over to a 4-bay NAS device?

Thanks,
