Confusing problem w/ 3570K Watercool overclock

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
I don't understand how everyone gets 1.25v 4.2ghz, or 4.5ghz with 1.3v. No matter what settings, different voltage settings my CPU won't boot with 1.3v running 4500Mhz. I can confirm this on two motherboards with the same CPU.

[Before discovering 4.4ghz overclock, I delidded my cpu which give me some extra room to hit that 1Ghz)

Gigabyte Z77X-U5DH: Originally got this motherboard when I first bought everything (including Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4). CPU wouldn't boot 4.4Ghz unless it ran 1.35v, yes this includes changing "auto" values in the bios to correct "stock" settings. Power options were set on High (vdroop was minimal)

Asus P6Z77-V: Installed this motherboard today and exact same thing. It won't boot unless 4.4Ghz has around 1.35v w/ LLC High (or higher). However this time I'm overclocking with watercooling temps

4.5Ghz = 1.4v (high power options)
4.6Ghz = 1.43v
4.8Ghz = 1.47v

These are only bootable options, not stable. My confusion is can I push my voltages up really high (aka 4.8Ghz 1.47v ++) because my watercooling temp does give me good results (1.432v @ 4.6ghz = 57c) or do I risk hurting my cpu life?

Make sure you turn off all power options like Cstate and stuff like that.
It could be you were just unlucky on the silicon lottery, my 3570k does 4.7GHz at about 1.4v, but for 4.8GHz I hit a wall and need sort of 1.46v, it's luck of the draw partly if your cpu is a good overclocker or not.
If you haven't already seen this, follow this guide, I know it says ASrock edtition but it can be applied to any mobo smile.gif
