Subbed. Holy cow... This is a great concept. It's nice to see someone trying to pack as many components in a space as possible, that isn't a small form factor case.

Any ideas on how you will cool the CPU? It looks nice the way you display it but I guess you will have something covering it eventually. I'm guessing you will have a custom block with the heat pipes leading to the massive heatsinks placed on the top and bottom.

There is a pair of Noctua Nh-C14's top and bottom. 6 heat pipes apiece. That means 2 heatsinks and 12 heaipes for the CPU alone. I'll model and render the CPU block to show what I imagine my modded block will look like. It'll use 11 of the 12 heat pipes for the CPU block. The 12th heat pipe goes unused, is removed from one of the heatsinks and in its place I'll re-route the heat pipe from the motherboard chipset into the heatsink.....which means I can remove the VRM heatsink block beside the CPU socket ......which means I can route the 11 CPU block heat pipes to the heatsinks easier without sharp bends. Which kinda works out quite handy really biggrin.gif

Last night I realised that I could actually fit 3 GPU's for Tri-Sli by re-orientating how I place the GPU's. Bonus is the lovely nVidia reference shrouds (which I assume they'll keep with minimal tweaks for the 8 series due late Summer) will be able to stay on and be visible through the top vents on the left side of the case. The only spanner that can be thrown in the works with regard to that is the 120mm maximum length SLI bridge. Assuming that one can get 120mm in the flexible type my model measurements suggest the bridges will reach when the cards are flat side by side. ( remember I'll have the cards connected to the mobo by PCIE-e extenders)

Nearly immediately however I thought I might just have rendered my top pair of noctua heatsinks moot now that I would be cooling 3 GPU's with them instead of 2. I removed the reference heatsinks from the 3 GTX780 models and placed them beside a copy of the pair of Noctua C14's. Oh Dear I thought. Doesn't look like much more surface area. If that had been the case, why wouldn't I just leave the GPUs with their reference cooling. However, upon measuring the heatsink models and comparing, I realised that appearances were deceptive. The 2 C14 heatsinks actually had 1.89 times the surface area as the 3 GTX780 reference heatsinks . ie. Pretty much twice the capacity. Thus the C14 pair for the GPU's were still very much a worthwhile mod even using them to cool 3 instead of 2 GPU's. I also then remembered that my heat pipe/heatsink research also indicated that heat pipes are magnitudes quicker at conducting heat away than direct contact heatsinks like the nVidia reference design. Then there's the 2 120 high static pressure fans being much better than the 3 small blowers on the reference gpu coolers and much quieter to boot. In short, it's not just the size of the heatsinks that one needs to take into account.

Did some more work tidying up the sketchup models, adding the 3 GPU's in the new position, modelling the modded Noctua CPU block. Making a light up Corsair Logo decal like the Density decal etc.

Just have to finish off one or two small things and hit 'Render' when I get home from work, so should have some more renders to post in a few hours.

Looks like a great idea and holds lots of premise.

A few questions from me:

  • What OS do you plan on running for all of this?
  • How do you plan on connecting up to 27 drives to this system if the build is already running 3 GPU's in the PCI-E slots? Where are the (multiple) HBA/RAID cards going to go?
  • What parity (Raid level) are you planning on running across these drives? I assume you're going to have multiple arrays?

I am super excited to see how this all pans out, very interesting build!

Your questions remind me that I need to go back and edit that first post from a few months ago.

I'll outline the overall plan but there are a few assumptions which will hopefully be clarified in time for the build.

  1. Windows 8.1 Pro

Hyper-V virtualisation enabled with 1 but possibly more VM's. WHS2011 will be installed on the VM in combination with Flexraid for drive pooling. I'll set up dual parity drives. So the 27x HDD Hotswap caddie slots will be split 25+2. 25x Media storage drives ultimately (Have 10x ready to go in) and 2 slots taken up by the parity drives.

The 2 hotswap trays already built into the case underneath where I have my Media Bays will hold the OS SSDs
  2. Something like the X99 equivelent of THIS mobo will give me enough PCI-E slots for 3x GPU's and 2 or 3 Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 8-Port SATA LP Controller Cards. I'll be using PCI-E extenders to move the GPU's to the top of the case anyway so dual slot GPU's do not conflict with the Sata Controller cards
  3. Answered in 1.

The plan is that this will be a games server as well as a media server.

We currently run 5x Passively cooled Arctic MC001 (Dual Core Atom and AMD 5 series mGPU) 1080p Media players running XBMC with content and shared mySQL library on NAS. 3x Laptops and 3x Desktops (2 of these are already powerful gaming PC's though)

The plan is to enable all the XBMC media players and iGPU equipped PC's/Laptops to be powerful gaming PC's by installing SteamOS and streaming the games running on the powerful Games/Media Server. The client devices need only be able to smoothly decode 1080P60 H264 as all the aforementioned devices are.

So basically any of the big screen TV's in the house with their low power passively cooled media players can play the games from the families 2..soon to be 3 Steam accounts via family&friends sharing.

There might even be the possibility of concurrent Game-Streaming from multiple steam accounts with the use of Multi-seat and Sandbox Software as outlined Here & Software Vendor Links Here) & Here ie. With Multiple Steam Accounts with Family Sharing enabled between all of them and with them sand-boxed on the multi-seat setup on the server it might be possible to Game-stream from all of them to 3 different clients concurrently.

Remember its just a 1080P60 H264 stream so as the clients and the gigabit wired home network can already handle that and the whole plan is one of my main reasons for salivating over an 8 Core Haswell-E processor with lots of ram, well hardware capabilty won't be a problem. If there is going to be a problem that puts the kibosh on the concurrent game-streaming plan it'll be software based.

I did investigate trying to virtualize the gaming machines/game-streaming aspect of the plan but GPU pass-thru to VM's is still not suitable for gaming after all these years. Its fine for Virtualizing tasks like offline CG rendering but is still no good for the real time rendering requirements of games. So realistically, the only hope for concurrent game-streaming is what I outlined in the last paragraph.

BTW. Should definitely have some new renders to show tonight tomorrow. redface.gifbiggrin.gif

I don't know if you noticed, but those Supermicro controller boards you linked to are PCI-X, which you won't find on a consumer grade motherboard. If you were using those as an example of what you had in mind, feel free to disregard this post. On the gripping hand, if you were going to use those cards, you are going to need a different motherboard than the Asrock one you linked to.
**edit**
This is the PCI-E version of what you were looking at on ebay:
http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SAS2LP-MV8.cfm
8x though, so you will need full length PCI-E slots to mount them.

Nice Catch! Thanks! thumb.gif

I'm researching a lot and learning a lot but I had no idea about that. Noticed they were PCI-X but just assumed without checking that it was an old legacy standard still supported on consumer boards.

I had also actually already come across those 2x SAS to 8x Sata cards and had them in mind but ruled them out when I thought the PCI-X cards were an option because it meant less cable mess to accomodate. The Hotswap Caddies I have, have hardwired Sata cables which I could have plugged straight into the SAT2MV8's whereas with the SAS cards I'll need some Sas-4 Sata conversion cables in between.

Thread Starter
A crash while asleep meant no renders ready this morning.

What I really need is a Power-house 8 Core Haswell-E Beast Machine Overclocked @ 4.8ghz to power through the Project Renders of my future Power-house 8 Core Haswell-E Beast Machine Overclocked @ 4.8ghz....... wth.gifwth.gif

Finished the Density³ Sketchup model and then built a room around it. Its not a model of my computer room or anything. I just grabbed bits and pieces from the sketchup model warehouse and put them together and added materials and lights in the rendering program
Anyway heres a sampler thats been rendering about an hour. Still quite noisy though.
