Just Pulled The Trigger On A RIVE, Headed For LGA 2011. Tips?

Hey everyone! I am slowly working on upgrading my rig to something more future proof to get me through Uni. when I'm poor. My current upgrade path is:

Windows 8.1 Professional OEM - Still Waiting ($139.99)

H100i - Bought $50.00

Open Box RIVE - Bought $333.00 (Biggest ticket I'll have to pay for this upgrade! Feels good to get it off my chest, wallet is hungry though) redface.gif

I7 4820k - Still Waiting

2nd 7970 - Still Waiting

SSD for OS - Still Waiting

But regardless can any of you veteran RIVE or LGA 2011 users give me any useful tips and just general knowledge about moving my system over? This will be only my second PC rebuild. The only part I have ever changed on my PC was my GPU and that isn't anything major. So I guess what I'm asking is what can you guys tell me about moving to Intel and swapping CPU/Mobo in a rig? (PS I'm excited to join the RIVE club in a month or so when I get the CPU in) tongue.gif

Not much of a veteran with the RIVE yet, but I also recently upgraded to the RIVE. Most important thing, which is pretty obvious, but a lesson well learned, is leave the dust cover on the LGA socket until the CPU is in the socket. My dust cover was on pretty tight, I popped it off, it fell out of my hands, and it bent 10+ pins.

I spent hours carefully repositioning the pins with a razer blade and magnifying glass. When ya spend $300+ on a motherboard, don't be stupid like me and bend the pins.

Otherwise, good luck. It's a great board. Enjoy!

That's crazy! I'll make sure to be EXTRA careful with it when it arrives. Wait... Did the board actually function after you fixed the 10 bent pins? ohno-smiley02.gif

Check your RIVE since you bought yours used, mine was used and 4 DIMM slots on the right were botch. There have been some boards on the ASUS forums that have mem issue as well. But 2011 socket is so good, still love my 3930k

It has a 30 day return policy with full money back from the time it reaches my hands (which should be about Tuesday of this coming week). So hopefully I can buy a 4820k or a cheap i7 3820 and get it headed this way so I can get some testing done. But it wasn't exactly used. The seller described it as "NIB Other". The mobo is still in its box, a sealed anti-static bag, but the outer box has been opened. Who does that? headscratch.gif

But anyways, should I re-install windows and things when I swap Mobo/Cpu or can I just unplug my mobo with the FX-6100 and just drop in my RIVE with LGA 2011 CPU and power on?

EDIT: Or I have an extra PSU sitting around... I could try and jury rig some form of temporary test bench... I don't really want to have to though. redface.gif

Rive doesn't come in a anti static bag, motherboard is in it's own box with a sheet of plastic on its back side and a clear plastic hard cover covering the box itself.

I bought two RIVE boards, one at launch and one a month ago, and both packaged the same way.

Best to reinstall windows with a mobo swap. you could just power up to see if all is well with the new gear, but then redo windows asap.

Ah I see. I might have to do that, it might not even boot into windows though seeing as my Win7 Pro is an OEM copy. And oops you are right, I was getting my pictures all mixed up. It does indeed come as you said, no anti-static baggie. My bad!

I switched out a 1090t and Crosshair IV motherboard to a 980x and Rampage III Extreme without a reinstall, but my Windows 7 was a retail copy. Not sure if you will get to windows or not after the gear swap.
