Yeah, just don't forget you have to replace it every 6 mos or so.

I'd rather not have to mess with TIM... I use Phobya HE grease, almost as good. (but not quite under the IHS)

I am still thinking about it, is 1.3 the safe max for haswell? as im back on 4.5ghz and only using Asus ROG RealBench software/Stress test as I find is way more realistic

I really WANT I delid my 3570K....but the IHS just will NOT move with the vice and wood block method. It's stuck fast!
My CPU was installed for a while under a closed circuit water cooler. I guess the pressure and heat of prolonged use may have stuck that puppy down tight.

I'm off to get some razors to see if cutting it off helps but with the chips to the edge of the pcb and the shock ripples in the IHS I am thinking the CPU may well be toast already.

How did you make out?

So far so good I think. :-)

A good thin blade did the job quickly and easily! - I actually got impatient the night before and tried to do it with an artists scalpel. Too pointy and not broad enough. Wrong tool for the job. Left a couple of minor nicks in the PCB surface from the scalpel. Not deep enough to cause damage it appears, but enough to cause some concern. I could see gold!

The blades I found were a bit thicker than double sided razor blades, yet thinner than stanley knife blades. Was very easy with a rocking motion in through the corner.

Cleaned up the chip, coated the surface scratches with some high temp super glue (as a kind of ghetto conformal coating.) tested it with Noctua NT-H1 TIM and my old Corsair H60 and was seeing around 47°C at stock clocks under Prime95 - pretty happy with that.

I have since lapped the IHS up to 1200 grit. (3000 grit paper kit on order for next session.) also lapped the bottom side a little, a little too much maybe, now the IHS doesnt actually seem to touch the PCB at all. Not really bothered about this though everything seems to work fine. ;-)

With the lapped IHS, Liquid Ultra between the Die and IHS and Noctua NT-H1 between IHS and EK-Supremacy waterblock in my custom cooling loop I am now stress testing a 4.8Ghz (1.25vcore) OC
Seeing temps of around 63°C under IntelBurnTest Max.

It completed IBT @ max a couple of times at 4.9Ghz but also bugged out a couple of times so I am stressing it hard at 4.8Ghz before moving back up to 4.9Ghz again. It would be fun to find what OC I can get to before breaching my personal ceiling of 75°C - I'll probably settle for a 4.5Ghz OC for day to day use though. (My IBT load temps at 4.5Ghz are around 60°C)

Regarding delid methods.
I would delid another Ivybridge with a blade in a heartbeat. It probably takes 5 to 10 minutes and the blades I found are sharp, thin and quite rigid. (somewhere between razor blade and utility knife blade. From a hardware store.)
The Haswell with its surface mount components under the IHS makes this a little tricker, but before I revisit the whole vice method I would want to get a proper, heavy bench vice, mounted to a proper heavy bench. Also, the wood needs to be nice and flat and an easy size to handle.
I think where I went wrong with my vice was it was too light and mounted to a kitchen table and my selection of pieces of wood was probably not so great. Its in the tools. :-)
