Upgrade to Comcast biz class 50/10?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
So I got an offer from Comcast to upgrade to 50/10 biz class for less than a dollar a day - that's what the email says. Right on the 16/3 where i get 20-25 down and 25-30 up. Given that wold I notice a difference If i get the 50/10? I am especially concerned about faster uploads.

You'd have to be a heavy uploader to justify the costs I guess.

3Mbps = 384 KB (kilobytes)
10Mbps = 1.25MB (megabytes)

16Mbps = 2MB (megabytes)
50Mbps = 6.25MB (megabytes)

It's really stupid how they measure in megabits and not in megabytes that it confuses the hell out of everyone. It makes people think 50 megabits is a lot because it's a big number. The truth is I have 50/10 service and I've never reached download speeds of 6.25MB per/sec ever. The fastest speeds I ever got was something like 3.8MB per/sec. So you'll have to justify if it's really worth paying the extra $$$$$ cause nothing is guaranteed to download at 50Mbps speeds 100% of the time unless you're on fiber.

Comcast download speeds were never a problem for me, it's always the download speeds that suck so bad. Even when my internet craps out to 2-4Mbps my upload is still a consistent 10Mbps which is ridiculously stupid. But if you were to get it, your upload speeds would be almost about 4x as fast.

Probably not, I'm kind of surprised that you're getting 25-30 up from a 3 mbit advertised cap. Is that correct? If so, it might simply be misprovisioned and you could lose that upload by changing packages.

It's really a question you have to analyze for your requirements if 2x the download is worth $25-30.

Sounds like there may be issues with your line or similar. I usually get around 10-12 MB/sec off of Steam with a 100 mbit line.

Also, upload will usually be a lot more consistent. If you look at bandwidth utilization graphs, the vast majority of people use a LOT more downstream than upstream bandwidth.

It's not mis-provisioned. Business class users are on a different node that residential. I have business at home as well. I have a 3 year contract with 12/2 and I'm usually getting over 20 Mbit down and 8-10 up. Remember, after most ISPs got hammered by the FCC because they would say "up to 12 mbit" in the past and people got pissed. So now when you sign up for a 12/2 package it's guaranteed to be 12/2 at any time, and can be higher. With their "speedboost" stuff my downloads will always jump to over 3 MB down, but throttle back down to a pretty consistent 2.2 MB. Multiply that by 8 for mbit and it's 17.6 average download, even though my contract says 12. I noticed that jump they day my home node was moved from res to business.

All depends. All speed upgrades are quite noticeable, but it's more if you are going to take advantage of it. I paid another 3 dollars month to go from 28/1 to 35/3 and the download speed I can feel through regular downloads. Especially for 3mbps upload it makes a big difference especially with VPN / Skype etc.
