Can I disable ALL cloud and internet integration on Windows 8/8.1?

Thread Starter
I have been thinking of finally installing my copy of Win 8 Pro that I got on the 15 dollar when it first came out, but the deeply online integrated portion of the OS is very troublesome to say the least for me. Especially with all of the recent information disseminated about the NSA and pretty much every single other country's version of it. I don't have anything to hide, but just using that as a way to to ignore the fact that many countries in the world are actively (and unlawfully) keeping all of our information is very, very troublesome. I do not want to run windows 8 if I have to run even one of the new features that puts my data in a cloud or watches what I do and/or search in order give me better results.

What do you guys know about it and what can be done about it?

When setting up Windows 8/8.1 you have the option of not signing in with a Microsoft account. That effectively removes all cloud functionality from the OS, but several key features will be disabled because they require a Microsoft account to work.

Thanks for the answer and now my question is what are these features that will be disabled?

Short answer seems to be:

Windows 8.0: Local account ok, integrated live id available, windows store live id works ok
Windows 8.1: local account is available, if you want to use the windows store you'll need to setup the pc with a windows live id integrated account

There is a option in windows store that says for 8.1 "update individually" and it prompts for a live id and local account but it doesn't work. If you want to use 8.1 windows store for metro apps it appears a local account joined with a windows live id for integration is necessary to "bless" the store to update the metro aps, etc. Just tested this.

That said, if you are just using non-paid apps create a live id with bogus data. smile.gif I'm sure the NSA would like a funny name for them especially.
