I'll give you some reasons why PS4 and everything else is so expensive here in Brazil.
1- Tax policy: there are a lot of taxes and they're cumulative. Example: you got a product that costs x. Then comes a tax that adds 5% over the original price. Then comes another that, instead of adding a percentage to the original price, starts in the ammount of x + 5%. That's stupid, I know, but it happens. Also, most of our taxes gets comsumption, not income. Everything we buy here has a lot of taxes included. But the sole income anual tax never gets higher than 27.5%, if you earn more than U$1.250.00 monthly. Yeap, that's ridiculous too. I'd rather have 50% of my income confiscated by taxes than pay taxes in everything I buy, just like Canada, Sweden, and other countries.
2- Profit margins: there's no control and the Market doesn't care about it. Brazillians are stupid enough to pay more for brands and they know it, so every product launch the price goes high. Here's na example: the new Golf MK7 was just released here, 1.4 TSI and 2.0 GTI. The first costs about U$33k and the last about U$45k. They're imported from Germany and by stupid protective policy, there's a limited quantity (about 4.800 cars per year for both versions). Any VW car sale store is asking for U$2k to 5k so you can have it first. BTW, if you want to buy the full version of both cars, they'll cost around U$52k and U$60k. And believe me, there's a line of idiots paying extra Money to have them, only because it's a new car and you can show of your status of having it first than others. In other hand, there's a lot of people who prefers paying the same quantity for the entry and "naked" versions of Mercedes A200 or BMW 118i (with no sort of comfort whatsoever), only for the brand, even though they're not well equipped as Golf. Ok, you can call all of this stupid (and it is). But remember the profit margin I said in the beggining. There's no tax that can put the price Sony is asking for the PS4. From here, I can buy the PS4, taxes included, from Amazon (they'll start delivering here late november) for only U$800.00. About the rest of the Money that Sony is charging is all profit margin, just because they couldn't get more than 10.000 PS4 units to a 200mi people country. Another example, the beautiful Chev Camaro. The SS version costs around U$38k in the USA. Here in Brazil, as explained by the head of the company, since there are no cars with the same looks or power, they positioned it around U$100k. And, unbelievably, they're selling lots of it. So, when you join stupid people to greedy sellers, you got Brazil's stupid price.
3- However, most people doesn't pay this huge prices here. I consider myself one of them. It's easier and cheaper travelling to Miami, spend U$20k in everything you can imagine and return to Brazil, risking being caught by our "tax police", which NEVER HAPPENED to me in over 6 years, btw, than being explored and torn apart by this insane tax policy. I'm used to do it and, happily, with brazillian economy growing, most people are too. That way, I don't need to pay taxes to a corrupt government and I can still buy the best products I need in my life. But even I didn't have the means to travel, I can still buy everything here, paying less the companies ask for. It's called the grey Market, where people import stuff and doesn't declare the taxes so they can sell cheaper here. You got a lot of them, travelling to Miami and Paraguay, returning with a lot of products and selling them way in a price that kills the companies. This is somehow estimulated by the government, who's coward enough to look the other way and keep this insane tax policy and letting every company do what they want to do with brazillian people. Yeap, now you can tell Axl Rose where's the real jungle kkkk
