ATi definitely kept AMD alive, they had decent GPUs when all AMD had was the FX and AMDs APUs wouldn't be anywhere close to as good as they are now if it wasn't for ATI.

Hopefully soon we'll see more money going into R&D, and as a result tougher competition (particularly on the CPU side, where they really need to step up).
Their main problem is releasing on time, if PD had launched when BD was meant to (Remember, PD was what AMD expected BD to be afaik) then it'd have been in a far better position than BD was...Same with SR vs Ivy/Haswell.
