Good TV Tuner Card and Antenna

Thread Starter
I am currently thinking about cutting my cable. However, I still want to get local channels like Fox, NBC, CBS, etc.
Instead of Cable, I am going to be using Hulu Plus, Netflix, and my own library of TV shows. The HTPC I want to use for this is the one in my sig (Lizzy).
My question is, does anyone know of any good TV tuner cards that have a low profile bracket and is compatible with Ubuntu and XBMC? Also, can I attach a TV antenna to the tuner card to get local channels?

Sadly the only cards I can recommend are Windows heavy based i.e. Hauppauge as most manufacturers still poorly support Linux. Even though Hauppauge supports Linux there's no guarantee that you will get ATSC/QAM etc... to work properly unless you're a programmer. You need a card that supports ATSC over the air if you want local TV as all local stations are now required to broadcast in digital so analog TV is dead. The best program on Windows was SageTV's BeyondTV but they have been acquired by Google which is kind of sad because they've done almost nothing with some of the software they acquired in the past. I have seen no future Google applications that uses BumpTop's 3D desktop workspace since being acquired. I suspect the same will happen to SageTV, it maybe be a lot of years before we see something being utilized by Google. But SageTV was the best on Windows for me because it picked up the best signals and most channels for me.

Your best bet is still the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 according to the LinuxTV.org database which uses a low profile bracket.

Yes, you can connect an antenna to the tuner to receive ATSC OTA channels. I have the HVR-2250 and use it to tune clear QAM channels in a windows environment using WMC. If you have trouble getting it to work on your LINUX box, you could always put the tuner in your gaming rig and still use XBMC on your HTPC as your front end. The latest version of XBMC adds support for live TV/PVR. You would just need a back end on your gaming rig to stream the channels. You could also run XBMC within a virtual machine on your gaming rig to use it as your PVR backend. You could something like OpenElec in your VM to use as your backend.
