I shouldn't make a comment, but I will. Considering that LoL/Riot is the one holding the world tournaments, it would be safe to say that it is the more "hardcore" currently. Just that the older players of the "DotA" style games prefer the original to newer. DotA 2, LoL, and HoN are all great games but cater to different people and play-styles. Haven't played DotA 2 since the beta, but I just didn't find it enjoyable at all. As far as them not trying, the main point of this comment, think about this : WoW was released after EQ had already established dominance in the MMORPG genre but they made it anyway and ended up making the longest standing and the most widely played MMORPG. I would like to see what they do with this. D3 had MANY issues when it was released but look at it now, exactly what everyone would say happend. They have patched, updated, tweaked, fixed removed so much of the game to get it to what the fans wanted. Even to go as far as entirely remove the AH (both Gold and RMAH) which you know raked in a serious amount of money for them early on. Blizzard's history as a developer has proven themselves OVER AND OVER again. They will take chances with games and ventures to try out new things and see how it works, then fix whatever issues arise later on. They always do. Name one game that they haven't openly addressed issues with and set forth to fix them? Not only that they are the MOST vocal developer when it comes to their mistakes, shortcomings, and addressing issues with their games. They actively engage their customers about problems with their games so that they can fix them. They also don't just to quick fixes without looking at the entire issue to make sure there aren't other problems from fixing a previous one.
I can understand that you like LoL more than Dota2. There are a lot more people who like it more, but Dota2 is overall the better game. LoL is rather this cute, weird games for weeaboos and casual.
I have played both plenty and coming from a very competivive background (CS1.6,WC3,Starcraft,Dota1) and for me LoL feels rather like a game you play on your Ipad or browser.
League of Legends even has more price money and bigger esports events and more viewer and more everything, but that doesn't make it a great game. There will always be better players amongst a big pool of players. Even if you were to play Truck Simulator online there are going to be players who are good and would call it an Esports game. Dota2 has class and Dota 2 esports events are a real treat for the eye. The international is something everybody should have witnessed in his life. There won't be a higher quality esports event in history.
Never forget just because something has a lot of fans and a lot of money in it doesn't make it great. There are more people listening to beyond aweful music these days rather than good music. Or everywhere else you can look. There are more people who read about news involving trashy celebs like the kardashians rather than people who read news about science.
I have spent countless hours with many Blizzard games and I mostly like them. I even liked Diablo III alot and spent much time in it even pushing paragon 100. But we are moving on completely new territory for Blizzard right now. DotA 2 and especially League of Legends are ultra successful in two different ways. I just don't see it happening. Both are free 2 play and except for Starcraft 2 Blizzard has problems with Esports. They are much more into the casual games these day and they make games for such a wide variety of gamers that competitive players are always cut short with Blizzard games and Dota players don't like that. They know Dota is THE one competitive "moba" and I only can see people switching if blizzard would throw more money into the pot than Riot/Valve.
League of Legends completely took over the casual market and they have many faithful supports, which I don't see jumping over to blizzards games because they already spent a fortune on digital stuff in LoL.
If somehow Blizzard manages to pull this off and wreck Dota2 and LoL on a lasting level feel free to collect the apology I am going to give you then.
