Need help setting up FTP with pfSense 2.1 and No-IP

post #1 of 8

Just as the title states,

I have a pfSense router running 2.1 release, and I want to set up an FTP server. Reading countless tutorials made years ago, I have pretty much lost all hope.

What I have done so far;

Made an account with no-ip, created hostname,and installed desktop client.

Set up FileZilla server, with tutorials having me run in circles.

Installed "andFTP" on my phone to access from external network.

Set up DynDNS service on pfSense with the credentials for my No-IP account.

Set up my main rig with a static DHCP address through pfSense.

Difficulties;

The hostname resolves to my external IP just fine, but times out on a port... I think.

Port forwarding on pfSense is a nightmare, one I'm totally ok with learning.

The box on which FileZilla server is running has a DHCP address, I can probably assign a static DHCP address to resolve any issues that may come in the future.

Almost all tutorials are for pfSense 1.2.3. Vast changes were made to the GUI and general operating when updated to 2.1.

In short, I'm stuck and need someone to pull me out. lol.

My problem is that when my no-ip hostname is pinged, it resolves correctly, but no connection can be made with the FTP client.

If you have a full front to back how-to for setting up SFTP, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, I'd avoid FTP since it does things like send your credentials in cleartext and has some configuration 'gotchas' such as having to forward both TCP 20 & 21 depending on what mode you're in.

You should be able to install OpenSSH for Windows. This would allow you to use SSH and by extension SFTP.

Ok, so I've got OpenSSH installed. Do I need both local and domain users' groups?

I've been at a stalemate all weekend. Primarily, because I bit off more than I could chew, and the wife's laptop is down for the count at this time.
