With the release of the PS4 and Xbox One soon, I did some thinking and decided to skip out on them and stick with PC Gaming. I want to make sure I'll be able to play at or above next gen Console level.
I'm doing a few upgrades to my system in the next few days. So basically this is what my system will look like
ASUS Sabertooth Z77
Intel i5 3570K 4.4Ghz
GTX 780 or R9 290X
G Skills Ripjaws X 8GB 1600 (2x4gb)
WD 1TB HDD
Noctua NHD14 CPU Cooler
Corsair Air 540 maxed out with 140mm Corsair AF fans
corsair HX850 PSU
Samsung 250GB SSD
ASUS 1080p Monitor
So will I be able to match or beat the Next Gens consoles? I'll be upgrading every 2-4 years depending on the performance upgrade it brings for the money. No quicker than two years.
just hoping I made the right choice in cancelling my preorders to do some upgrades to my PC.
You could beat the consoles with what the consoles cost, including the yearly subscription fees. You're system will always outperform the next gen consoles. This system that you've made will probably beat even the next next gen consoles.

There is a bit of iffyness surrounding what th new consoles are going to be able to do. Because they;re moving to x86 architecture it will be much easier to port games to PC, but AMD is also taking to opportunity to make sure it get some advantage out of the whole thing. AMD has been hampered by games only being written for 4 cores. The new console chips are all 8 core so it is possible that it may become a requirement.
NO one knows yet. When the first major games come out for the consoles we will know pretty quick though. Me I'm hanging with my old dog lga775 till that info comes out and I know what to upgrade to.

It won't be a requirement for years though. It's not like they are going to have another console popping out every year. That 8 core has to last them 5-6 years. They aren't going to max out the performance on release. I doubt an 8 core processor will become necessary for a few more years.
What's listed in my system called "Intel" is what I currently have. The additions I posted is what I'm getting in the next few days like the HDD and SSD, the new case and fans, new power supply and swapping my 7950 out for either a gtx 780 or R9 290X
That sabertooth board you got has 3 video slots. Why not just pick up another 7950? You've got the room, and it will be faster than a 290x for less money

Would it really? Because if it's going to be faster then I'll just get that right now along with the new psu because my CX600 doesnt support crossfire or SLI

For around $350 I can get a new psu and another 7950, seems to match the 780 and the 7950s weren't really overclocked. Rather do this and save money for a new gpu a few years later.
How does that work? When I open MSI Afterburner will it show an option for both cards. Do I have to enable crossfire or just plug in both GPUs and bridge them? Never did this before.

plug in the gpu and connect the cards using the CF bridge. start your machine. install drivers. in AMD CCC there will be an enable crossfire check box.
