Dolby Digital Live only sends a stereo signal

Thread Starter
Anyone here have experience in setting up Dolby Digital Live on their soundcard? This is supposed to allow for multi-channel audio over digital, rather than having to use analog outputs.

I have it set up on my xonar, but it is only outputting stereo sound. The receiver is confirmed to be receiving a DD stream. Also, anything that is pre-encoded is confirmed to work.

Basically, it seems that Windows isn't aware that my DD output is multi channel... Therefore, no programs (games) are aware of this either.

Any insight would be appreciated! thumb.gif

I use it to send 5.1 to my Denon AVR. It's part of my motherboard's onboard audio and it uses Realtek HD Audio Manager to specify default output format, so in my case I set it to Dolby Digital Live AND specify which output to send it to. Making sure it's set to the right output format and output jack would be where I'd start. Hope this helps.

Make sure that you have Windows set up to output either 5.1 or 7.1 surround depending on your headset.

I don't see anywhere to set that in Windows. Under output formats in SPDIF, you have all the standard PCM outputs, and Dolby Digital Live.

If you go into your playback devices and you click on your speakers, make sure that you have them set to 5.1 or 7.1 whichever you're trying to use.

Here: this explains it better than i can.

Let me know if it works.

On the Xonar when you enable SPDIF, it disables any other analog outputs that aren't plugged in. So there are no "speakers" or "headphones" in the Sound control panel. Just SPDIF, which does not have a "configure speakers" option.

The weird thing is, on Creative Labs cards with DTS or Dolby Live, the "Speakers" stay there, and when you enable encoding, they get changed to 5.1 automatically. On the Xonar, they just disappear when SPDIF is used.

Sorry man, I don't know what else it could be but good luck. Hope you get it sorted out.thumb.gif

It could be the fact that you're running the DD signal through 2 DSPs, and the receiver is expecting to decode a DD compression stream, not get it handed off aalready done.

Try sending PCM to receiver and let it do the DD decoding, with the info I have to go on, I'd bet that'd work...
