Would Windows 8.1 force me to conform?

Thread Starter
This is my biggest concern. The one thing I love about Windows 7 is I was finally able to customize it to my liking. I don't care about Metro, in fact I believe people should try and adapt to it even if it feels uncomfortable at first, because unless there's another company ready to knock Microsoft off their seat, Metro is likely here to stay. However, a few months back I spent nearly two weeks tinkering and customizing my Windows UI to make it something unique.

I downloaded Rocketdock, I customized Rainmeter, downloaded unique skins for all my programs and finally changed my Windows Theme to have it all blend together. Will I be able to do this in 8.1?

Also, how is privacy in Windows 8.1? Will I be forced to log into a live account 24/7? Will I be forced to log in for updates or is it possible to just use a local account? and what's this I hear of Bing Ads being forced on users?

You should be able to use all those programs and change the theme with 8.1, someone else may be able to confirm this.

You need a live account and from what I can tell there is no local account option in 8.1, if you are worried about privacy just create a new live account and use that to log in to 8.1

You can disable bing ads at setup.

Rainmeter still works with 8.1. I haven't bothered with it much but what I have does work.

You can still set up local accounts. Though they are harder to find now and are not recommended. The only thing you "need" a Microsoft account for is the App Store. Updates can still come through Windows Updates but a change like 8 to 8.1 required being able to login in through the App Store (due to hardware configuration and privacy settings supposedly).

As for bing ads there is some confusion at the moment with it. Turning it off is dependent on how you sign in. I use my Microsoft Accounts to sign in. There is the new personal data dashboard webpage and from there you select to turn off Bing settings and control it across all devices (xbox, windows phone, window 8, etcc..). Turning it off in a local account right now only turn off the personalized ads not the ads themselves as far as I can tell.
