Article for CPU bottlenecking

Thread Starter
I stumbled upon this article that compares the Intel Core i7-4770K vs Core i7-2600K Gaming-Performance

In the article i skipped strait to the summary. The summary is quoted below...

Last summer we published a similar series of articles, where we were analyzing gaming performance on the basis of two different processors. Back in the days it became very clear that performance differences between two CPU's at high resolutions are close to zero. The reason for this can be found within the fact, that the processor isn't the bottleneck of a system, when you're playing games at high resolutions. In this case it's the graphics card, which has to work overtime. In case of lower resolutions the influence of the processor becomes clearly visible, since the graphics card isn't the limiting factor anymore.

My question/concern is speaking in terms on higher res gaming, I have the AMD A8-3850 Llano 2.9GHz Quad-Core CPU. My res is 2560x1440 and I play most modern games to date, my frames are terrible at high-ultra settings. If I upgrade my GTX560 to something like the GTX780, will it be worth it in terms of gaming? CPU may bottleneck but not for gaming if I am correct?

I think that A8 will be a bottleneck, but i'd like other people's thoughts.

At that resolution and details with that video card you are massively gpu bound. Depends on the game of course but as a rule of thumb you will see a massive increase on framerate going from 560 to 780.

Agreed and it would be better if he had a stronger processor for the 780 but man, a 560 vs 1440p@ ultra, massacre.

A8-3850 is good max for 1920x1080.. You will not 100% utilize gtx780 with that cpu. 2560x1440 u need at least 6 amd cores or i5. Of course depends of games u play. In this scenario i would buy something like gtx660Ti, gtx770, HD7950 and test. And try to push cpu more.

You would see a massive increase in fps and the gameplay would be so much smoother. You can always get the 780 now and upgrade the components around it in the future. The 780 will still be a powerhouse in a year or 2. Im just now getting ready to upgrade my sli 570s and I bought them almost 2.5 years ago.

Thanks everyone for the input. I do plan on upgrading my system, so getting the graphics card will most likely be the first. However, its unfortunate that when going with a Mini-ITX form factor that AMD is limited to such weak CPU power because of power consumption I am assuming. Where Intel Mini-ITX boards support even the beastly of their CPU's.

At the moment I play LOL, but for games like skyrim its set to low-medium. Still looks amazing on this monitor though.
