I used a 8120 & a 8320 overclocked for rendering & my electricity bill was through the roof, not to mention all the psu's I went through lol, I sold them as they just wasn't working out?

what is his full system specs?

A mild overclock wont hurt but id make sure he's got a decent psu first?

just my opinion

If you think overclocking was blowing your PSU's then maybe you should reconsider the quality and OEM of the PSU's you're buying... thumb.gif

Also, overclocking typically won't have a noticeable effect on the electric bill, especially with "normal" use - ie. no 24/7 rendering.

yeah the quality of the first psu was poor, however even after getting decent efficient one's overclocking was still drawing way too many watt's.

the op said that his friend does a lot of rendering/encoding that's the reason im advising not to really overclock in this situation, say your render is going to take like 10-12 hours. your better off leaving all Powersaving & thermal throttling etc on for stability & having piece of mind.

my electric bill was high! I had 2 fx system's both with multi gpu setup's & since I went over to intel its almost half of what it was costing.

Why do people care what their friends do with their own stuff?
if your friend has a 990fx board with decent phase's & a decent PSU he should be ok? he doesn't have a really powerful GPU so id say he could probably do 4.4ghz & be stable/ safe.

forget it though if he has some cheap psu & a 970 board, he will only pay for it in the end?

id just let your mate do what he's doing tbh, then he cant blame you if anything goes wrong?

I would have to agree and say, he did spend money on the cooler, why not overclock, but that AMD chip runs hot at 125w. Im glad he got it anyway.
