The way how marketing says the surround should be used is certainly gimmicky, but it does not mean that the surround doesn't have its uses.
It all depends on the games you play, most newer games have their own pre-mixed headphone surround so the Dolby/SBX/CMSS-3D are completely useless with them.
Xonar DG costs only 30$, and the quality is enough for 180$ studio headphones like the DT770 Pro 80ohm.
Battlefield2: Project Reality:
Headphone surround emulation is a must. Without it... Stereo Skyrim sounds like heaven compared to it.
Oh dear god how bad it sounds without the surround... I don't like the way it handles sound at all.
Dolby/etc have little use as the game has its own pre-mixed headphone surround.
