Thinking of buying a AMD FX 8320. Opinions?

Thread Starter
G'day OC,

I've been thinking of upgrading my PC sometime between now and the end of the year. I always wanted to go along the line of the Intel I5 4670k, the 4670k is currently ~$90 more than the AMD FX 8320.

I thought to myself the other day that maybe I will go along the AMD line with the AMD FX 8320. It's 8 cores of power, right? With a few youtube videos I found the CPUs are quite similar and in general only a few frames between each other. I'll be running this setup with a Nvidia GTX 660 and 8gb of RAM.

I'm mainly looking at things from a gaming perspective, I use Fraps often to record so that's a factor. I'm also editing videos fairly often and plan to do more editing in the future and I want to start working on my own music, So I also plan on some production if you'd call it that.

I currently have a Intel i5 650 with a H55M motherboard.

I also can see that the next generation games are going to be running on AMD, so this has to be a advantage from AMD?

Here's what I'm thinking of, also would like some suggestions on which Motherboard.

CPU: AMD FX-8320
Motherboard: AsRock 990FX Extreme 3
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 (may go to 16)

Should I buy the 990FX Extreme 3 or put more money in and buy something better? I've never overclocked before but it's something I'd like to do.

Thanks!

the 990fx chipset allows for multiple video cards. If you're uninterested in that you can go 970fx chipset. You need to be careful you get a board with robust VRM though.

There is a list here http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database

well first off..the extreme 3 is only 4+1 power phasing,,,not good enough to overclock a 8320,,'''properly""you need a board with 8+2 power phasing,,sabertooth,,crosshair-v-z,,,also your CM V8 wont get you past 4.4ghz with decent temps,,,i recommend a closed loop cooler like a h100 or something like that if your case supports a 240mm rad,,h80 will fit in any case,,,whats the specs for your PSU,,your I5 650 is a 73watt cpu,,the 8320 is a 125 watt cpu,,,

I'm probably going to switch out the V8 cooler and go custom loop when I upgrade, so that won't be a problem. I have a 700W Thermaltake PSU at the moment but Im going to buy a new PSU soon, so I'll buy whats needed.

FX-8320 is a good CPU. I have one myself and I love it!

If you don't have an AM3+ board already, I really would not recommend building an AM3+ system unless you are a real AMD diehard.

Not necessarily.

Next gen consoles are using AMD's Jaguar, which is only tenuously related to the FX series, and even if they were using Vishera, it's doubtful that any level of optimization could overcome the general IPC defect relative to modern Intel uarchs.

Overall multi-threaded performance is competitive, but you need a better board/VRM (relative to Intel) to extract this performance, which makes it a wash from a value perspective. Also, single threaded performance will barely be an improvement over your i5 650.

sigh more red team vs green team. It's all conjecture till the consoles come out. The 590 isn't that slow. I'd wait and see myself.
