Looking for upgrade advice 460 SLI - Page 3

Just upgraded from SLI 460 1GB (cyclone), been running these for several years, but 1GB memory is catching up with them. I opted for a pair of 7950s for $180 a pop. CF support is getting better and nvidia prices are just outrageous.

Like others mentioned you need nicely OCed 7970 to see improvement or go CF/SLI.

Does the amount of Video Ram make such a different? I cant see it make a big difference on 1080p or am I wrong?

Also does a i5 760 on 4Ghz bottleneck a Radeon R9 280X / 7970? (might as well ask it on this thread instead of creating a whole new one).

Odp: Looking for upgrade advice 460 SLI

It won't bottleneck it. 4GHz is just fine. For 300$ I would go with 660 sli or 7870 or the the new R7 CF. You've got titan performance right there. Best bang for buck and you already know that multi gpu is that bad as they say. Scaling on 7870's is just impressive.

Yes, the amount of RAM does make a difference in some games. Until I got my GTX 680 last year, I was running SLI GTX 470s. If I remember correctly, they have 1280MB of VRAM. While at the time I could max out any game, when it came to BF3, on certain maps I would max out my video memory at 1080p. This would cause momentary freezes.

With games getting more and more graphically intensive, I wouldn't recommend anything less than 2GB for 1080p (which most of the current gen cards have anyways).

Absolutely. Some games take advantage of more than 1GB of VRAM. My SLI 460's topped out in some BF3 maps and cause stuttering on Ultra. Using the Rivetuner statistic OSD with my new 2GB 670's, BF3 on ultra uses ~1.5GB of VRAM at times.

To the OP, I just upgraded my cards to SLI 670's. A bit pricier, but I think SLI 670's or 760's would be a nice upgrade. If you aren't in a huge hurry, you could wait for a deal of some sort on the cards. I managed to snag 2x670's for $400 off ebay.

For 300 dollars you can get very good card used. Have u thought about ebay/craigslist? I prefer craigslist because you can test out the card before you buy it. Its all so a good chance to meet people with similar intrust.

There you go:

http://www.techspot.com/review/644-nvidia-geforce-titan/page4.html

660SLI and 7870 CF offer titan performance. 2GB or vRAM is enough even @2560x1600 So I wouldn't worry about that.
