h80i not detected/red blinking light/ fan making more sound than usual

Hi, i have an h80i cpu cooler and one of my fans stopped working so i tried connecting a spare fan i had, which was bigger, to see if it would work at all. I connected it to the power that comes out of the cpu block which is connected to the usb and mobo.

Well as soon as i connected it, my white light on the corsair logo started blinking red and the remaining working fan started to speed up and is louder now.

The computer never did detect the h80i device and i never cared since i didnt even use the software. Now im trying to fix it and downloaded the software. Tried to do an update to it and it says "status: h80i/h100i not connected!"

Even with all the problems, the system seems to be working fine, except it has a red blinking light, fan is louder than normal, and i still cant get the device to be detected.

Anyone have any suggestions?

might be the USB connector on board or possibly power coming through to fan. not all fans are the same... My antec 620 kulher needed fans replaced and I got same size/volt as it had, but they would not spin up when connected to cooler, I had to use the 4 pin adapter to hook it straight to power supply.

also check device manager for any device problems. maybe rollback or reset usb drivers (an update can cause conflicts)

Im thinking it might be a connection to the mobo because i nvr had drivers for the cooler. I had no problems until i tried hooking up another fan to the h80i cpu power connector. It just instantly started freaking out. (The original fan that works is the one freaking out. The one i tried adding was removed instantly after noticing the red light blinking response and fan going faster) i guess ill open it up tomorrow. Its late where im at so i gotta call it a night.

Ill see the response tomrrow. Thx.

Few questions:
Do you have Corsair Link installed ?
Is the cooler detected in corsair link ? If not maybe it is time to RMA it.
There you can change the light from blinking to constant lid and change its color. Also you can set up fan profiles and make them work more quiet. The only known fans to work fine with H80i and H100i are the original ones, every other fan will work at full speed. There are fans with RPM limiter in the cable which makes them run at slower rpm and kind of run well with these coolers, but without it will run at max speed. Also the driver required for usb connection is within CorsairLink software so you don't have to look for separate driver.

replacing it as a pair would be easier than mixing fans on a dual unit. make sure you plug it into a usb 2.0 header, might not work if connected to 3.0. I don't use W8, but it might have found a driver for you if you never installed one yourself. would make sense that you can't find it if ur rig already has it loaded as something else(like a generic usb hub).

Cant RMA it. over 30 days. And plus im overseas now. I decided to just connect the two corsair radiator fans to the mobo cpu fan slots. They are running quiet now. The red light is still blinking on the corsair logo.

I changed the usb connector slot to another one on my mobo and it still is not being read as a device at all by device manager or corsair link.

The fan that i plugged in that caused this whole problem pretty much was trying to draw more energy than the corsair h80i usually gives out. Since it is meant to only be used by those certain corsair fans.

I just dont get 3 things. Why the device is not registering, why the light blinks red, and why the fans go super fast when connected to the h80i instead of the mobo.

Its like its permanently trying to give out that same energy even though the bigger fan is not connected.

One more thing that comes to my mind, if you have installed USB2 drivers along with chipset drivers remove them and use microsoft ones, i had a problem that H100I was not detected by Gigabyte x79-UD3 and i solved it with removal of intel usb2 driver and left windows to use microsoft driver instead. Tottaly forgot about this when i gave you my last advice , but before anything else try this. To do this open device manager and uninstall all usb hubs with deleting driver for them, then refresh and windows will use the default MS drivers for USB2.

BTW i did not have such issue with my MOBO which is x79-UP4, the cooler was detected right away with the same intel drivers for USB, but in UD3 it started working when i removed intel USB drivers
