Is this HDD dead?

Thread Starter
I have to reinstall XP on this HDD I have as it was not booting properly. I first tried repairing the XP installation, but it was not detected by the recovery console. So I managed to do a backup, although some files were unreadable, especially some system files.
Then i tried to format and reinstall, but format failed as I got errors (picture). Also, Crystaldisk returns some errors too. Can this be fixed? Or is the drive only good for trash?

They're cheap. Drives wear out. You MIGHT be able to get it going again, but it will likely just eventually fail again and you might not get a backup off it that time.

Safest easiest course is just get an new HD. On the bright side you can take your old one apart and scavenge a really powerful magnet and some very shiny coasters.

and a touch evil if you want to leave him with a failing hard drive. You can't just tell the dude to buy a new drive?
