I know of the throttling issues. I am currently running the MSI's in crossfire and I couldnt figure out why it was throttling. I thought it was thermal, but its not. I'm not 100% sure what actually fixed it, but I will tell you of the things that I have done, and I do not have this issue anymore. I will have to try later on in the week to see what brings back the throttling.

I think the cards are power limiting themselves too much. Just using afterburner or whatever you choose to all the +20 power seems very necessary and probably should be from factory.

Second thing I did, and you are going to call me crazy, but I decided to run both crossfire bridges. I honestly think it has made the cards run alot better. Each card was overclocking to 1200mhz on stock voltage fine on their own. In crossfire I was having trouble with just 1150mhz. They run fine now with both bridges.

Dont forget to disable ULPS.

Before these things I couldnt even get the game to run BF3 and I almost returned them. Now BF3 runs great.

I agree with disabling ULPS, before I did I was having the same problems as you (yes, both throttling and heat issues with my 7990). I just use sapphire trixx to disable it and use the asus gpu tweak software for everything else.

Also, how long ago did you get the cards? Some might disagree here but I noticed that the TIM took 2-3 days of gaming to actually settle and I have 15C lower load temps now (there was very slight smokey smell coming from the cards but now it's gone so I'm guessing it was the TIM).

Can anyone tell me if these ASUS card should be unlocked on voltage? They are advertised as such yet GPU Tweak shows me different voltage than it real is according to MSI Afterburner (Afterburner won't let me do any changes to voltage).

I'm confused how this thing work.

Your card shouldn't be voltage locked. My asus 7990 isn't voltage locked on the aus gpu tweak but is in msi afterburner as well. However, I have yet to update msi afterburner to the latest software...

I am locked to 1100mhz with my card though, don't know why as I was under the impression that malta/reference 7990's are not locked for mhz/voltage. I have tried switching the bios switch but it's the same.
