A question on the Sound Blaster Titanium HD's output impedance

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. I've lately been on a search of a new pair of headphones (I just can't stand the ad700's anymore. Their soundstage is excellent, but the lack of bass is driving me nuts, unfortunately.). Now I have my eye on a pair of Philips (who would've guessed?) Fidelio X1's. They seem to be sort of just what I'm looking for at the moment: great bass, but a good soundstage, and pretty good with mids and highs (I guess I'm a little rebellious after the ad700 rolleyes.gif ). Now, a plus to buying these in my mind, was that I wouldn't HAVE TO buy an amp for them right away, allowing me to save a little bit of cash, and possibly buy an amp at a later date.

Anyways, now for the important stuff: I have the Sound Blaster Titanium HD sound card, and it is supposed to have a high impedance output through the headphone jack (on the card itself). I have read elsewhere that having a high impedance source with a low impedance pair of headphones is supposed to make it sound unfavorably (distorted bass, etc. (Does that damage the headphones?)).

Sorry for the read, but the real question is: If I got an rca to 3.5mm cable (from monoprice or elsewhere), and plugged the rca to the line out on the Tit. HD, the 3.5 into the headphones, would this result in a better sound? As I said before, I'd like to hold off on an amp for now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The RCA outputs are line-level, that wouldn't work.

I recall reading somewhere that the output impedance of the Tit HD is something like 14-16 ohms. This will work fine until you decide to buy a dedicated amp. You'll still have a positive damping factor, so it isn't going to make a huge difference.

Edit: See above

Next, amps are far more necessary for good bass. Even your ad700s would gain a bit more bass from a good amp (although not enough to make you happy).

Those philips headphones are good, but over priced. I would be looking at a used set of sennheiser HD600s. They sound better, and you can find a decent set for ~250.

Tit HD has 35ohm output impedance.
And line-level is usually ~100ohm.
