So swap that cable and everything will work again.

nope screen is black when plugged into gpu

Lucid Virtu (what allowed to use the GPU via the mobo HDMI) doesn't work with 8.1 yet...

Did you enable secure boot and disable CSM in BIOS after installing 8.1? If so, that may be causing the black screen with your GPU.

As others already mentioned, your 7950 is not being used because the monitor is plugged into the mobo. You need to be plugged into the GPU so your top priority should be figuring out why the screen is black there.
