First of all, my relevant system spec:
Intel i5 2500k
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ cooler
MSI Radeon 7990
XFX 650W PSU

In some games (BF3 MP 64-player and Crysis 3 (Welcome to the Jungle)), my CPU is maxed at near 100% on all cores and both GPUs are sitting at 50-70% use, and framerate is less than desirable (around 35-40 or so). I wish to increase it by overclocking. So far, all I did was put 4.3 GHz and it was unstable on Prime95 or IBT so I put offset voltage at +0.02V and now it runs flawlessly, with around 1.320-1.332 Vcore on load (bigger load = lower vcore). Temps, however, worry me, as they are already at near 70C for Prime95 blend and around 75C on some cores for IBT maximum stress level.

I don't think temps should be that high, what could cause this?

Anyway, this increased FPS to about 45 on those areas which caused problems before, but I still want to push it further, aiming for 4.7 GHz. So I just went and put offset voltage at +0.1V (load Vcore is around 1.416V) and decided to run Prime95 and IBT. It is, however, unstable (Prime crashes after less than a minute, IBT can only complete standard stress level). In both cases, it causes a BSOD with error code 0x101. I adjusted QPI/VTT to 1.1V (increase of 0.05V) and CPU PLL to either 1.7V or 1.9V (change of +/- 0.1V respectively), but that didn't help. For the short while that it ran, temps exceeded 70C on Prime95 and 80C on IBT, so I do not plan on using IBT as a stress testing tool anymore, since that's way too high. However, I still need to achieve stability in Prime95.

How do I get my CPU stable? Surely 1.4V should be enough for 4.7, unless I have a terrible chip, or not doing something right with the other voltages. Either way, what's the max voltage I should go for?

The reason I'm asking is that I've seen people with the same CPU and cooler get way better results than me, OC and temp-wise. Also, this motherboard overclocks weirdly (massive voltage drops if using set voltage), so it might be the cause of instability.

Probably just a bad chip. My 2700K takes 1.42V for 4.8GHz, and won't do 5GHz stable with less than 1.5V

Damnit I knew it was going to come to that... worst 2500k possible? Or maybe people with bad chips just don't brag much about it and mine is part of a silent majority? Idk I assumed all of them would be capable of such OC with reasonable volts, seeing the posts here and on other forums. Anyway, thanks for the input.

Well, you have to keep in mind that a lot of people own "K" series CPU's, but don't overclock. I've seen chips that were as bad as or worse than yours.

if it's any help I've got an unusually crappy q9550. I can't get it past 3.4ghz. it's the CPU lottery.
