Advice on overclocking a 3770K

Thread Starter
I have been playing with a 3770K on an EVGA Z68 FTW for a couple of days now and have some questions about my overclock.

The chip will run stability programs at 4.8 Ghz on a setting of 1.4 volts with the vdroop control enabled resulting in load voltages of around 1.43. Temps are maxxing out at around 80C on water cooling. At 4.9 Ghz it will run 8 threaded benches at the same voltage with lower temps , but when I try for 5 Ghz it BSOD's under any load at all.
The next setting in bios bumps the voltage to 1.5 and if the vdroop control add the same boost it does at 1.4 , it will top out at 1.53, is that a safe voltage to run this chip ? Where do temps start to become a problem for this chip?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you cant dial anything else in between 1.4 and 1.5 vcore? This seems very strange. Have you tried updating your bios? Other than that 1.5v is too much for daily use. You can bench since your coolings permits, but thats it. Tbh i would stay below 1.4v. As for temps, 80c max for daily use, gaming, encoding etc and 90c for benching.

I think 90.c is where stability starts to go bad,,,every chip is different when it comes to voltage,,1.53volts ,,,ummm,,,I've seen worse,,,,,be careful your at the limit,,,surely your not gonna run it 24/7 at those clocks

Thank you both for your replies, it appears that my offset voltage in bios only allows for .1 volt steps, with or without vdroop control on either setting. It's the first EVGA board I have really messed with and maybe I am missing something.
Yes, it has the latest bios available - it had to be updated to use the Ivy bridge chip,
Again I appreciate your input, smile.gif

edit: pretty happy with the imc in this one http://valid.canardpc.com/aetf6v
