How much better is the 770 than the 280x? Which card is more powerful? Which card is overall better?
Since the 280x is just a rebranded 7970Ghz edition they are trade blows. Depending on optimizations, the 770 is better and sometimes the 280x is better. Go with whichever is cheaper for you.

Get the 280x, if you're getting either one of them now. It's cheaper and has 3gb of vram and a 384bit bus for more bandwidth.

Card is better than a 770 overall.

The r9 280x wins for one reason only and that is price. These cards run neck and neck except the 280x is about 60 to 100.00+ cheaper than the 770

R9-280X will probably last longer due to the 3GB VRAM and all the AMD Mantle support (if it indeed becomes relevant).

However in some texture heavy titles the GTX 770 wins out. (Assassin's creed 3 for example and Far Cry 3 which is a Gaming Evolved title for some reason)

It is highly likely the GTX 770 will be severely devalued in the near future with the R9-290 launching (and presumably a GK110 GTX 770Ti).

* Any title where they come within 5 FPS = HD7970 is better by virtue of price. tongue.gif
* This is 1080p, at higher resolutions the HD7970 has more memory bandwidth so it scales better (384 bit @1250Mhz is already more than 256bit @1850Mhz) , see http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/61369-nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-2gb-review-5.html , http://hardocp.com/article/2013/06/06/msi_n770_lightning_overclocking_review/3#.UmXvuBDAZlk

If you plan on folding/BOINC , compute heavy titles like Company of Heroes 2 and Grid 2, or using OpenCL stuff grab the R9-280X. If you need CUDA or use AutoCAD, hold tight and wait for a GTX 770 price-drop or GTX 770 ti.

I would go with the AMD Radeon R9 280X like everyone else is suggesting. It will likely last you longer and also costs quite a bit less.

Depends on how you plan to game, multi monitor, whatever. If single monitor or just using a couple monitors but not gaming across them, save some money and go with the AMD card.
