I don't know much about SSD's and whould like opinions if it would be worth it for my system to upgrade to a ssd,
my system is in my sig below. I have only delt with 1 ssd on a system I built for a friend and it only looked as though the system just booted super fast.
also my board has 2 6.0 gbps and 4 3.0 gbps, the 6.0 have the marvel controller which I heard is junk, the 3.0 are intel.
and I already have my hdd's set up to run as AHCI in the bios. I will be keeping 3 of my 4 hdd's as I have lots of photos
stored on 2 and games on 1,

Only the very fastest industrial SSDs can saturate sata 3, so you can basically ignore the 6.0 vs 3.0 thing. sata 6.0 is totally backwards compatible, so you can think of your system as having 6 sata 3s two of which are future proofed.

SSDs dramatically speed up some games but not all. It's most useful for games with a lot of area seams like Skyrim, Borderlands, or other big map RPGs which are constantly loading data as you move through the area. It can but usually does not, affect MMO shooters when players are frequently logging on and off.

Having even just your OS on SSD is quite nice though, because it speeds up all the silly stuff like booting and web browsing and the like.

I just recently upgraded to an SSD and all I can say is you need to buy one, boot times are incredibly silly fast now and you can use the pc so much faster than before, buy one, NOW!

SSD's are definitely worth the investment, and especially because you have a X58 platform and the corresponding CPU power, they read and write much faster than the Velociraptor, never dealt with the Enterprise level(16,000RPM) HDD's so can't say they are faster than that, but I had personally noticed programs that I stored on the SSD, such as VirtualDub, C++ Visual Studio, Photoshop etc... to work much faster on the OCZ Vertex 4 than the Velociraptor 10000RPM I had them running on before.

As for your choice, can't say I have personally worked with the Samsung SSD's, but I have never seen a bad review of them from anybody, and most people speak quite highly of them.

An SSD is definitely worth it. The Samsung 840 Pro seems a bit of a waste given your motherboard, though. I'd just save a few bucks and get the 840 EVO if I were you.

Not true. I reckon even one of the high capacity Samsung 840 EVO with TLC NAND is already capable of saturating or even exceeding SATA 6.0Gb/s (particularly in TurboWrite mode). SATA III is a bottleneck for high performance consumer SSD's. That's the reason why there's a major push for PCI Express based standards. That said, the big jump is going from HDD to SSD (with near 0 access times and 10-100x random small block performance) so really, practically any SSD will be an upgrade.

How can SATA III be a bottleneck if the read and write speeds are approximately half a GB, the one he has chosen being (540R/520W) ? Or are those averages(medians) rather than highest possible output?

SATA 6.0 Gb/s (gigabits per second) translates to around 600 MB/s (megabytes per second). Capitalization matters. Taking overhead and general inefficiency into account, 500-550 MB/s is likely real world maximum already.

only the very fastest industrial ssds are even capable of saturating sata 3, let alone sata 6. Sata 6 is a white elephant for consumer class devices. It's just not needed. There are sata drives that have sata 6 connections, but ost of them don;t have the thruput to actually take advantage of it.

PCIE 3.0 is quite similar. Most pcie 3 cards would be totally happy on pcie 2.0

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but this does interest me...
What do you mean by "capitalization matters"?
Is there some site/benchmark/book that you can point me towards that you can validate this information and help me understand better as to why they get away with saying 6.0Gb/s when in actuality it is 600Mb/s?
