So i was kinda in a rush to get started today. And since i didn't have ANY isopropyl alcholol in my house and was eager, i decided to take my Trident-X Heatspreaders off by heating up the heatspreaders to make the tape warm enough to pull it off.

1st stick was going well, then the 4th chip from last popped off the stick

2nd stick i heated up for longer, went real smooth, til the very last chip popped off

3rd and 4th i heated for even longer and used a razor and no problems.

So i spent a good few hours googling and youtubing, then decided since i just broke them, i have nothing to lose by trying to reflow the chips back onto the PCB.

It didn't seem like either the pcb or the chips were necessarily damaged, the solder/pin breaks were "mostly" clean enough. So i brushed a little flux on both sides of the break and then reflowed with my Hot Air Reflow Station (Gun, no oven)

From stuff i read googling, i did the reflows for roughly 2 minutes each chip. Temps starting ~120-130 => ~170-180 => ~230-235 => ~160 => 120-130 => Off (Degrees in Celcius)

Now my problem is that the chips look like the reflow was successful (which i wasn't expecting), now i'm not sure what i should do.

The plus side is that this shouldn't affect me getting my loop setup since i can just put the sticks in the Monarch Modules without the thermal pads and place the blocks on for measuring/leak-testing. And 16GB is fine for testing my GPU's.

The downside is i have no idea how to test the other 2 sticks without putting my mobo at risk (which i'd rather just buy a new kit). I didn't take any pics of this because i was kind of in Panic-Mode.

Rushing & Eagerness + Modding & Watercooling =

I didn't even wanna post about this because i feel like such an idiot. But that's what build logs are for :o

That socks, when I removed the heatsink from one of my Corsair vengeance dimms (to fit a tower cooler in my case) I just slowly pulled it off, no heating or anything. I guess I'm lucky cause I never thought to read up on it so could have quite easily destroyed one of my dimms. This was like 6 months+ ago and they still work great.

DING!
My 1000th post smile.gif

Oh man :S Did you get any pics of this? how did you mess up the first one and then just move on to the next? I would be soiling my pants tongue.gif
Im guessing your old PC is DDR2? so cant test in that.. hmm.

Is a tough one.. on one hand, it would be awesome to test them to see if you successfully re soldered the mem chip
on the other, is it worth risking the mobo?
How confident are you that the solder points lines up? the method you used has vary little chance of shortening any pins if they are alined right when heating.

I hope it works out for you smile.gif

Damn K frown.gif

I also removed the heat sinks from my corsair vengeance with some force, still had the glue sticking on the chips, and also all 4 sticks still work.
Maybe Corsair made it easier than G.Skill?
This means I will never remove the heat sinks of my ripjaws. Better safe than sorry

Just RMA the ram and get replacements tongue.gif

Kidding.... but seriously

Sucks tho, I would have flipped a top if that happened, and would have likely just stopped there not gone any further.

Yeah i don't even know what to say about it. I definitely wasn't expecting em to just pop off the board like that. I was careful, it's not like i just tried ripping the heatsinks off like a gorilla. I didn't stop after the first one, because what good is a 3-Stick Quad-Channel Kit?

The front plates came off easy. It was the back plates that ripped the modules off both times.

They seem to be lined up. Obviously they're BGA Chips so it's tough to tell. I can only tell for sure that the top 3 pins and bottom 3 pins are lined up. And there's a little bump in each corner of the chip to help line it up. Not much experience with reflow and smd tho, so not sure if i feel confident enough to risk my whole rig with the sticks

I was definitely freakin out, that's why i didn't say much in here yesterday. I was spending hours googling & smacking myself in the head. The only plus side to this right now is i can definitely still use all 4 sticks to mock up my loop, and i still have 2 good 8GB sticks to test with. So this is probly the first crappy thing that's happened that doesn't need to stop my build.

I'm pretty sure i'm just gonna use the 2 sticks for testing and order another kit at the end of the month. The 16GB will be useful to have around for any future build & i can test the 2 reflowed sticks on a cheaper mobo in the future. The way my lucks been going with this build, i can just imagine shorting out my RIVE BE & 4930k

Yeah i will. I actually tested the 2 chips today by lightly pulling on them. One popped back off and one didn't. So I'm gonna try reflowing at a higher temp. I really don't know the solder that's used on these, and just based my reflow off a BGA Oven profile i found for some sort of ram. It was tough to find alot of info on the topic.

So i can take pics of the chip that popped off.

I bought the same memory kit and the EK Monarch for them. I will be getting a hot gun next month to try the installation.
