Thanx brotha. I'm gonna work on at least getting a render of where i'm at with my mod right now. Then I'll go through the updates of how i got it to where it's at. Then I'll work on a render of my goal with the build.
Thanx again brotha. Stay posted. At the very least I'm gonna be posting an update of how i took out the 3.5" cage and put in a 2nd 5.25" at some point b4 i go to sleep. Have about 200 pics of that whole process. So gotta spend a little time picking 5 or 10 good ones thumb.gif

Nice! Glad I could help get you planning biggrin.gif I kind of want to pick up an XB myself, but it's a lot larger than I expected it to be and is lacking some features that I would like.

See, when i got mine back in late May or early June (I don't remember which), I read alot of reviews that made me think it would be bigger than i expected. It's the exact size i hoped it would be. Small enough to be portable, but big enough to fit a RIVE, 7990's, and WC'ing if you wanted. That's perfect to me.

What features is it lacking for u?

Feature-wise, I wish it could fit a 240 rad without sacrificing the drive bays in the bottom. The 5.25 needs to be swapped with the Hot Swap Bays, and the whole left side of the case should be empty. It would also be nice if they offered a version with solid side panels. Otherwise, it fits the bill decently. I've been getting into LANs as of late, but I still want ATX for all of the features, like better power phases and more options for AMD sockets, so I can make my current processor last longer. Otherwise I'd have to spend a bunch of money on an intel mATX setup. And granted I could get an APU, but none of the boards carry the features I want. Mini ITX would also not work, as the more expensive intel parts, and I want to be able to do SLi and have 4 RAM slots, as I already have 2x4GB sticks, and I'm getting a GTX 660 for free from a friend.

Sorry about the whole shpiel I just went on, it's just so hard to find a case that fits my needs, so I've narrowed it down to a scratch build, but I don't really have time to work on it between school and work.

Well you can fit a 240 rad uptop. I got rid of my 3.5 bays entirely and have a 5.25 cage on each side. So 4 x 5.25 bays. You can fit a low profile 240 rad along the bottom 5.25 bay and still use that bay for a fan controller. That was my original plan til i decided to push it further so i can fit a 360 there biggrin.gif

Well not even that low profile. My XT45 240 fits in the bottom 5.25 bay with enough room for a fan controller. I have the Rheobus that Performance-PC's has on sale for $8.99 that i grabbed just for testing purposes til the Aquaero 6 comes out. The Rheobus is a tight fit, but it fits. The Aquaero would fit with room for cable routing with the XT45 240 behind it

I like this idea, but I don't want to have to cut up the front panel either.

I don't want to do a ton of modding, as I don't have time, and it's not guaranteed to work out the way I want.

Maybe I'll just buy a Parvum or something...

I really want a CaseLabs S5, but $280 is a little much. And it's mATX as well. Such confusion!

Maybe I will go with an XB, I'd rather see how this log unfolds first biggrin.gif

Nothing i just said involves modding the front panel. Well 4 x 5.25 bays does. But you can fit a 240 up top with no modding. That front fan mount is actually a 240 rad mount. I modded it to put a 280 UT60 in there, and i don't like the way it looks anymore. The 240 along the bottom 5.25 bay would only involve modding depending on the fan setup your hoping for. But yeah, if you can wait a little bit, you'll see more what i mean as this log progresses. Over the next couple days if you keep checking in and dropping SketchUp wisdom on me, you'll see what i'm talking about =P

OK, so between the 290x release and getting caught up learning how to use SketchUp, 5 hours pretty much just FLEW by. But I'm still gonna try to at least update my log a little bit...

Since i decided to focus heavily on Cooling in this build, I decided that 5.25 bays are way more useful to me than 3.5 bays. Especially since I'm laying my rad along one of my 5.25 bays already. Luckily OCN is FILLED with extremely helpful people and Vaporizer sent me the 5.25 cage from his XB that he wasn't using. That way it didn't look outta place when i modded it in. This was the next mod that i did to my XB.
First i drilled out the rivets to remove the 3.5" cage. Then i just drew some guidelines to have an idea how tall i should make the hole

Next i cut off the little wings for the X-Dock Doors with some Metal Snips

Next, I masked off the whole area and used my trusty Klein Nibbler to straighten out all the edges to give me a better square to work with

After checking everything was OK so far. Time to really cover everything with masking tape and start taking real measurements. These are gonna be the measurements that i use to cut out the new 5.25 bays so needed to be precise...

Time to get to work

Got the Vertical Axis cut to size. Time to test fit the the new cage to see how wide i need to make the hole

This is something I'll need to circle back to later

Back to work...

Uh Oh. Some definite scratches in the paint....

This should do just fine til i give it a painjob biggrin.gif

Now after spending some time with a File and a Dremel Sanding Drum it's time to start figuring out the Rivet hole placement
But first i have one more thing i have to sort out

So now i basically took some Spring Vise Grips and held the two cages together so the tabs on the side of each one from the pic above were perfectly parallel. Touching each other without overlapping, and then took my Spring-Loaded Center Punch and hit each hole like 4 times in a row ( It didn't work anymore by the time i was done with this cage). Then I grabbed the drill bit that was just smaller than the holes (Don't remember the size) and did my best to line em up

I used screws for the time being til i do my paintjob, then I'll use rivets when i won't need to remove the cage again

As you can see here, the holes didn't come out as perfect as I'd hoped

I basically just widened the hole in the 5.25 cage with the drill bit til the holes lined up.

I'm not gonna bother showing the process of cutting my front panel because I have an extra front panel and I'm gonna end up redoing it anyway. Basically I just used a Dremel Plastic Cutting Wheel for the big parts, and then used a 240 Sanding Drum and 180 Sanding wheel for the finishing touches.

Here's some final pics with the front panel on

Sorry about the crappy phone pics. Sometimes i can get em to come out decent. Other times not so much =P
This is my first build log, so if this was hard to read through or whatever, you won't hurt my feelings my giving me advice tongue.gif
Thanx for reading guys. I'll have more coming soon thumb.gif

That actually doesn't look too bad... Hmmm...

Nice work! I hate using tin snips, luckily I have access to a plasmacutter when I need one >smile.gif

Thanx. It'll look better with rivets and when i redo my front panel. I just cut the 5.25 hole just a little too wide in the plastic =\

And yeah, Plasma Cutter > Tin Snips LOLLLL.

My Dremel or Nibbler would've worked for cutting off those wings off too. The tin snips were just so damn easy.
