Cool. I'll pay more attention to that for the 290x pics. Thanx.

Anything else you can see? Outside perspective is always more helpful than my own eyes.

I figure it's better to use white background for black stuff and black background for white stuff cuz it'll give better contrast. Dunno if i got that backwards. Kinda just wingin it

You have to overlight the background, it needs to be at least a 1/2 stop over what you're shooting.

So you need to separate your subject from the background more -- scoot it forward and then aim a light just at the background. You need it brighter than the foreground if you want something to "float" on white in a high key scenario.

You can also accentuate the contrast in your processing. You want to give it more of an exaggerated curve... or in photoshop, use Levels and drag the right hand slider to the left and the left hand slider to the right.

What you were saying about the exaggerated curve, did you mean like this?

I always try to make it look as natural as i can because i always feel like i'm making an "fx" pic when i do stuff like that. I'm still a complete n00b with all this photography business though, so i appreciate any help.

All 3 of them? Cuz i feel like they're a bit too far too....

Well I actually like this 3rd one i just posted. What do you think?

I need some guidance in my Photoshopping skills :D

I'm probly gonna take my 290x apart again tomorrow and take some pics of it with my lighting. I'm gonna try lighting the backdrop better like NYMD said. Maybe it'll turn out better.

Also think i'm gonna have to take a drive over to BestBuy and grab the cheapest DDR3 Dimm i can find. Thanx for pointing out that option for me btw :thumb:

I usually work overtime trying to make my pics not look over-photoshopped. @NYMD just warped my whole perspective of what i'm supposed to do. I haven't seen any tutorials about lightroom yet, so just kinda trying to figure it out by myself.

Still too much you think? I think these last 3 might be closer to what @NYMD was trying to explain...

sweet card!
Are you gonna do a test run with it? Just to hear how loud it really is, and how hot the temps will be?
For comparison when you place the fcb on

I might. If i didn't have to RMA my ramkit i definitely would. Right now i have no ram. I'm thinking of running to bestbuy and picking up a single cheap dimm like @wthenshaw suggested.

My Kryographics Block and all the stuff i need to run a temporary loop to cool my 4930k will be here Thursday. My Trident X kit's being shipped back to Newegg today. It depends how many days i'm sitting here bored between my Thursday and whenever i get my new ram from delivered from Newegg.

I was planning on testing it on air, and there's a chance i'll wait. I'll probly put the Kryographics on it with no TIM just to take pics, so i can have stuff to do while i'm waiting. I really should just run to BestBuy. I was psyched the other day to finally have all the hardware i needed to boot up my RIVE BE for the first time. Damn Newegg...

You're getting closer!

But you are right, the processing is too far -- you're compensating for the lighting not being quite right. In my examples, I did do some processing with the curves but I also lit the background more with the placement of my lights. You also don't need to soften the background light, you can hit it with your direct bulbs.

"1/2 stop over" means you want the background to be brighter than the foreground object by at least 1/2 stop, preferably a full stop. A stop is a measure of light hitting the sensor.

If you expose the background correctly, you'll still be able to see detail in the white drop sheet. You don't want that. So you want more light hitting the backdrop than is hitting your subject. Now when you expose correctly for the subject, the background will be overexposed. That is what you want for "high key" or white backdrops where you want to isolate the subject.

Anyway, you're getting it. Play around with your lights more so you don't have to do so much processing and you'll be there.

One more tip to add a bit of punch to your photos is to isolate your subject better with depth of field. If you post your camera gear and what mode you shoot in, I can give you some better advice, but basically it means closing down your lens aperture so you get some parts in sharp focus and the background goes softly out of focus.

If your exposure is correct at f/8, turn down your lights and get the exposure correct at f/4.... now see what that did to your focusing area and how it highlights what you're focused on.
